Computer Shuts Down Improperly During Sleep Mode

I have a Lenovo AIO computer running Win7/SP1/64 purchased in February of 2014. It runs perfectly well except that when I put it in sleep mode, at some point it shuts down improperly. This just started about a week ago. Other than that, it runs fine. I can't think of anything that changed to bring this problem on. I opened it up to clean out any dust to make sure it wasn't overheating but that didn't help. I checked that drivers are up to date. I am using Kaspersky antivirus and ran a full check that didn't show any malware. I don't know what else to do and need help with this frustrating problem. Thanks.

Hi Rob- I was hoping to get more specific direction to get this issue handled quickly. The posts you referenced are from back in 2011. Since everything worked well up until a week or maybe two weeks ago, I figure a lot of those suggestions are now obsolete. Can we hone in on the most likely things to try and/or tests we could do to pinpoint what's causing the problem?

Windows 7 was released in 2009 so many web searches will turn up older content. Also, Windows 7 end of life/support was January 14, 2020, meaning you haven't had any security updates from Microsoft since that date.

You are running an insecure operating system with no way to fully secure all its vulnerabilities.

From Kaspersky - Kaspersky applications compatibility with Windows 7.

That being said, if you don't mind waiting on me as I am at work, I'll look into this as time permits. Someone else may chime in as well.

I'd start by asking, do you have restore points? If so, do you have one to revert to before this issue occurred?

Open an elevated command prompt and type powercfg /availablesleepstates hit enter and copy and paste the output here.

I checked for restore points and it seems I only have one for 7/19/2020. My auto-shutdown issue pre-dates that so it doesn't help. I installed Kaspersky on 2/2/2020 and haven't had any problems with it. (Incidentally, MS continues to send me security updates. My understanding is that if you have third party antivirus installed, e.g. Kaspersky, it will defer to that and not use MS Defender as long as the third party antivirus is active.)
Regarding the sleep states, this is the information you requested.

I understand that you guys volunteer to provide this help and it's much appreciated. I didn't mean to be difficult, I'm just somewhat frustrated with this issue that's taking time away from other things I want to do.

You're not being difficult.

Let's try this:
In the same elevated command, prompt type powercfg /hibernate off hit enter and reboot.

Use the computer as normal and see if that fixes the issue. You can turn it back on by typing powercfg /hibernate on, hit enter, and reboot.

The file that the sleep function uses could be corrupted and this will delete it and recreate it getting rid of possible corruption.

Edit: I'll be leaving work and going to my daughter's karate so I may not be back on for a while. I'll check in when I get home.

I turned the "hibernate" off and rebooted as you suggested. Last night I put the computer to "sleep." Unfortunately, this morning when I woke the computer I saw that it had shut down and once again I got the message that it had not been shut down properly.

Rob- Are you waiting for something from me? If so, I don't know what it is. We're back to square one on my issue and I'm waiting to hear back from you.

Yes, anytime one of us asks you to complete a task, we are waiting on a result to see if the issue is fixed.

I spent the evening with my Family and did not log back on after seeing your response. I assumed you were testing and would let me know the outcome later.

When you respond, be as thorough as possible with your post. This enables us to help you more efficiently and accurately.

See my signature regarding backups. You need a backup plan. Having a backup plan, for instance, One or 2 Full backups and as many incremental backups as space affords, you can choose one of those incrementals and go back to that specific date. This is advice for future computer issues you may have.

Download and install this utility: WinUpdatesList - View Windows Updates (Service Packs and Hotfixes) Run it and look for KB2541014, if not there, download and install it below.

Download this Win 7 hotfix and install it. Download Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2541014) from Official Microsoft Download Center

I didn't find KB2541014 on my computer. When I tried to download it I got this message:

I'll wait for further instructions.

For what it's worth, here's one other thing I've noticed. I have my power use set to dim the screen after 5 minutes and turn the screen off after 10 minutes. What I notice is that if I'm not using my computer for a while, it will dim the screen and turn the screen off as programmed, but without my doing anything, the display will come back on in a minute or so on its own.

We were out for 3 hours. Before I left I had "Sleep" turned on. I woke the computer up when I got back and it had shut down. It rebooted and I ran the commands you wanted.

Here are the requested outputs:

I'll wait to hear from you.

Hit Start, type PowerShell, right-click on PowerShell and choose open with admin. Get-EventLog -Logname System -Newest 1 -Source “USER32” | Format-List
Post its output, please.
