This is pretty much a continuation of a problem I had before that I thought was fixed well enough, but last night it came back with a vengeance. I have no idea what triggered it. PeterJ helped me before, so I'd like to have his help again if possible. If he's unable to help this time around, the original thread is here.

For some reason the problem came back last night and is worse then ever. Many websites freeze up my computer. Amazon is one example. Strangely, it doesn't freeze until after I search for something. Before the freeze happened, I had updated my Avast program, cleaned up all my temp internet files and history with CCleaner, and defragged my harddrive. I used system restore and went back to a week prior to try and find out what caused it. It doesn't seem to be any of those things, and I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. I'm glad this site doesn't freeze me up at least.

I should also note that right about a day after PeterJ helped me last time, I randomly got a BSOD. It never occured again after that, but I have gotten them on rare occasion before. I'm sure it's do to still having some corrupted files. I really thought it was good enough and that I had taken enough of PeterJ's time. That's why I decided to quit last time even though running scandisk told me there was still corruption. Needless to say, this time I definitely want to get rid of all corruption that's left and solve this problem for good.

So I decided to try redoing the last step that PeterJ gave me from my previous topic. That was what solved the freezing last time, and it seems to have done the trick once again. So I'm at least fine at the moment.

(y) That's good to know. Do let us know if you have any further problems.

Issue is back yet again, and repeating those last 2 steps PeterJ gave me is not working this time around. Good news is that I managed to find an old Combofix log from 2014. I believe this may be where my problems started. I think I was having some kind of issue back then that I couldn't solve. I was very frustrated and (stupidly) decided to use that as a last resort, but soon after I started having occasional freezes. Since they were fairly rare, I had just been dealing with it since then, but of course recently the freezes have been happening a lot more then normal. I had totally forgotten about all of that until I came across this. Keep in mind that some of the stuff in that log (as you may have guessed) I no longer have installed on my computer.

Could use some help ASAP. I've been waiting almost a month. I eventually got the freezing to stop after the last post, as somehow repeating the last 2 steps PeterJ gave me yet again (I had already tried that) worked the 2nd time around. However, an Avast update has now screwed everything up for me. Nearly every site will freeze the computer, and the only videos that don't freeze my computer are YouTube videos. Repeating any of the steps from the original topic does no good. I've tried over and over again. SFCFix is showing me 0 issues found for everything. I'm at a loss.

Hello,

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Was gone for a few days visiting family over thanksgiving. Here are the files.

Sorry if I came off as impatient, I'm just really frustrated with these issues. I know you guys are super busy dealing with people all the time. Hope you had a good thanksgiving, Peter.

No problem.

I looked at the ComboFix log. It is more than 8 years old.
Let's start with the fix below.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

The log looks good.Do you notice any improvement ?

Unfortunately no, it's still freezing up on videos outside of YouTube and even after a Google search.

Also forgot to mention before that I did try a system restore to fix this. It gave me an error message saying system restore failed, but it actually seemed to work anyway although it obviously did nothing for me. It screwed up my Avast which now won't open and fails when trying the "repair" option, but it says it's still protecting me. I'm pretty sure a reinstall will fix that, but I'll worry about that once I fix the freezing.

Try to uninstall all Avast products the normal way.
Don't do anything else, even if the uninstall fails.
Report the result.

I only had 1 other Avast product (Driver Updater). I uninstalled both as you said, then I tried loading a video on MSN and it still froze.

Just an update. Everything is working great now. I've reinstalled Avast and haven't had any issues. Nothing is freezing the computer. However, I did run sfc /scannow and it still tells me that Windows Resource Protection found some corrupt files that it was unable to fix, so here is the CBS log.

I was going to suggest to use the system without Avast for a while but as the freezing is gone now keep Avast installed.

Attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CbsPersist_20221128074617.cab to your next reply.

The log looks good.
Restart the machine.
Run the command SFC /SCANNOW again in an elevated commandprompt and report the result.
