Components hive corruption in Server 2012 R2

Hey guys,

I've got a 2012 R2 x64 installation that is preventing me from running installations and hanging on windows update, attempts to use SFC/DISM have kicked out errors. Poking through the corresponding logs revealed it to be a components hive issue, which I do not know how to repair. As per your walk through, I ran the SFCFix.exe file and it too failed. The generated .txt file is available below.

Unfortunately, there are no backups of the system at this time and as it is running a licensing and updates server a res-installation is not a small undertaking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As some background info, one of the recurring problems that I am unable to deal with is that HKLM\COMPONENTS is inaccessible, and prevents me from attempting to load a backup copy I made before attempting to have the system recreate it. Trying to open the hive gives me a permission error
"COMPONENETS cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied."

I also get 3 consistent windows update errors listed as "fixed" when running the update diagnostic tool, even if I run it back to back. These are
"Service registration is missing or corrupt"
"Windows Update error 0x80073712"
"Problems installing recent updates"

DISM /restorehealth /limitaccess against a locally mounted .wim is also giving an error (Error: 14098)

Let's take a look at that components hive.
Run this script to automate the collection and upload process:

SFCFix Script

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

I've been doing a bit more digging this week, I got as far as finding a bit of metadata corruption that DISM wasn't able to automatically repair. Below is a relevant chunk of the CBS log. I was looking into the methods of manually repairing/removing these items, but to prevent conflicting with any of your help I'm going to stop working on it.

It looks like the components hive is empty. Do you have any earlier versions from a backup?
 
I have a backup of the original COMPONENTS file (%windir%\system32\config\COMPONENTS) from when these issues began, approximately 63 MB vs the 256KB of the current hive
 
Please zip and upload that hive to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Step 1 - Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP from above and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Step 2 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
 
Had to do a safe mode boot to rename the old hive, but everything is in place now. I'm doing the DISM scan now, and considering it hasn't failed within the first 15 seconds as it has previously, I'm pretty optimistic.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If the zip is larger than 8mb you will need to upload to a file sharing service such as DropBox, OneDrive, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.
 
DISM got a bit grumpy, errored out with 0x800f0906 "The source files could not be downloaded."

The resulting cbs log is attached, only ~800k (there's a 1.5 GB archived log from yesterday :eek:)
