Hi all,

I'm not usually one to ask for help but this problem really has me stumped. I've been asked to fix a netbook, I've narrowed the problem down to corrupt files relating to update Windows8.1-KB3087985-x86. Basically there are 4 .cat and there corresponding .mum files.
as a result of this problem, internet explorer is completely broken and thus dism cannot fetch replacement files. Uninstalling the update fails due to the corruption. I have sourced the replacement files by extracting from a downloaded version of the update but I'm struggling to come up with a way to replace them. I can't do it offline as the drive is bitlocker encrypted. To make matters worse, the laptop has mCafee LiveSafe installed which I cannot disable because I cannot open the user interface (They cleverly decided to make their user interface dependant on the most commonly attacked part of the OS)

I'd really like to avoid a reinstall as she has no record of her Office 2013 key.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kev

Hi Kev :)

If you wish to do a reinstall, you can use ProduKey by NirSoft to grab the Office 2013 product key on the system, if that is all that's preventing you from reinstalling it.

ProduKey - Recover lost product key (CD-Key) of Windows/MS-Office/SQL Server

Let me know if you still want to try to fix the files manually :)

Hi, in my experience Produkey has never successfully recovered a key for Office 2013, to be best of my knowledge there's no program capable of doing so.

However, if the meantime, she remembered where office came from and I was able to retrieve it from an old MS account. So I reinstalled and all is now well.

For future reference, I'd be interested if you could point me in the direction of any information and how I may have tried to fix this corruption though as I'm sure I'll run into similar issues again sooner or later.

Thanks for the response.

Glad to see that the issue have been solved.

There's an article on Microsoft TechNet that shows you how to handle CheckSUR logs (created by SURT) and fix commonly errors you can find in it.

Hopefully this is what you were looking for :)

Edit: And here's another one on SevenForums.

System Update Readiness Tool - CheckSur.log File Analyzis - Windows 7 Help Forums

Much appreciated, I hate to fail and this should help prevent it in the future :)

No problem kev, you're welcome :)
