Hey

Thanks to the tutorial section I've repaired 5 of the servers I take care of.
This one has me stumped.

Server 2016 Standard, 1607, Build 14393.5921
Updates don't work.
SFC seems to be broken.

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

C:\Windows\system32>

CBS Export and Component Scanner log attached.

I have run a chkdsk /s /f (just in case) but symptoms are the same.

Thanks for the help.

...and this is beginning to look like a reload/in place upgrade...
Can't unload the components hive via regedit.
It's size is only 8Kb...

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Unfortunately, the COMPONENTS hive is damaged beyond repair. Do you have recent backups of this server?

...Even the oldest backup has an 8KB COMPONENTS file.

Damn.
So, I have an 800KM drive ahead of me.
It's always fun when servers are in a remote location.

Would you suggest a W&R or an in-place upgrade?

When you have a very similar server (Build 14393.5921 / same Servicing Stack, etc) than you can try to use that COMPONENTS hive as replacement. Then you should be able to perform a repair install.

Once I have substituted the COMPONENTS hive from another server, is there any chance that a SFC or DISM could rescue this server?

Usually not because the difference between the COMPONENTS hive and other parts of the registry. So when you use a hive from a very similar server there will be always remaining issues. So the best way is to replace the corrupted hive and perform an in-place-upgrade.
