Command Prompt (CMD) - Copy/Paste (Windows 10)

You can now use CRTL+A to select all; CTRL+C to copy highlighted area; CTRL+V to paste directly into the Windows 10 Command Prompt (CMD) Screen instead of having to RIGHT-click in the header space and select commands from there:



Quite a surprise - I never thought after all these years that Microsoft would add these features to CMD for those of us that are diehard line command fans!

The screenshot in the tutorial contains a cmd.exe screen. CTRL-V paste worked fine for me (cmd.exe)

It was done on W10 beta.

Are you running W10 beta or RTM? I haven't loaded RTM yet to check it.

"RTM" = Release To Manufacturing, i.e., the final version of W10 released to the public 2 days ago (not a beta version).

Ctrl keyboard shortcuts not working inside Command Prompt

In the technical preview of Windows 10, we found out that we can Copy (Ctrl + C), Select All (CTRL + A) and Paste (Ctrl + V) using keyboard shortcuts into the Command Prompt window. Further information can be found Here. Some of you may notice since updating your computer to the full RTM version of Windows 10 this feature is not enabled by default. To enable this feature please follow the steps below:

  1. Open up command prompt by Right clicking on the

    button. Click on Command Prompt.

  2. Inside the command prompt window right click on the Window title bar and select Properties.

  3. Click on the tab Options -> Untick the option "Use Legacy console" -> Then tick the option "Enable Ctrl key shortcuts".

  4. Close out of the CMD window and open a new CMD window, the keyboard shortcuts should now be enabled.
