This windows server 2012 Essentials (NOT R2) has been running well until June 22 when there was a series of power surges and outages during severe weather. After restoring the Samsung NvMe boot drive from a previous day's backup, the machine booted, but there wee network errors (failed bindings, failed DNS) which I was able to correct. However, Windows Update which was set to automatic began to fail with the above code. System Center Endpoint Protection, however has continued to update definitions and its program without problems.

I followed the instructions under Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions. SFC /scannow reported no problems. DISM reported Error 6801 Transaction support within the specified resource is not stared or was shut down due to error.

Attached is the zipped cbs folder and files.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Hi!

This will reboot the Server (potentially many times, it's expected).

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Farbar started and then got stuck at Deleting temporary files: C:\users\USERNAME\Appdata\Local\Temp

Shall I just kill it - reboot and start it over?

So the first to fail back on June 21 was KB4561612 2020-06 Security Monthly rollup for WIndows sever x64
and KB3048071 Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 and WIndows Server 2012 for x 64.

Since the first failed update it has only been prompting for the second one, but the list of installed updates still lists the first one as failed

It did not offer the security monthly rollup - just the .net update and it failed here's the cbs.log

In researching the June 9, 2020 updates for Server 2012 x64 there were 3. I was only offered the two above, but KB4562252 was a Servicing Stack Update to replace the March SSU KB 4540726.

So now I am wondering whether I need to download and manually install the June Servicing Stack Update from the Microsoft Downloads Catalog? I hesitate only because these MSU's cannot be uninstalled

I attempted to install the Servicing stack update KB4562252 for Windows Server 2012 x64 systems downloaded from the Microsoft Catalog. After a few minutes of "searching this computer for Updates it returned "This update is not applicable to your system".

So original problem of Windows update being stuck trying to install KB3048071 remains, and no updates are succeeding. Worse, the system continuously throws up a nag screen about no updates have been installed for the past 30 days, which must be canceled of the system is very unresponsive. Please let me know what I need to do now.

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

I did as you instructed, and once Server Essentials 2012 rebooted into normal startup I ran windows update - which said no updates had ever been installed. Within seconds of starting to check for updates it stopped with error 8024A000.
I rebooted and launched Windows Update a second time. This time it ran a bit longer - but less than one minute and returned 80070BC9 - which was the original error of this thread.

Just to remind you what's a little unusual about this server is that it is booting off a Samsung 970 Pro EVO NvMe. Updates were working fine on this setup until the June update series. and the June 9 Servicing stack update never installed or was even listed in the failed updates.

Just a note to remind that this problem is still not fixed and I am just waiting for the next steps to try - Thank you for your help thus far.

Hi!

Please do the following:

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.
