Changing Product Key?

Has anyone ever used the "Change product key" option in Control Panel to upgrade your Windows version? How did it work for you?
I was thinking of upgrading my Windows 8.1 desktop to Windows 8 Pro.

Never used it to upgrade, but have used it to change the product key.

I imagine it would just unlock the additional features of the superior version.

This is how it works, yes. You enter the key in the Anytime Upgrade area.

Windows 8.1 desktop to Windows 8 Pro

Assuming you meant Windows 8.1 > Windows 8.1 Pro, yes, it will work.

Also, whenever in doubt, reference the upgrade paths page - Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Upgrade Paths
