While performing a Windows 7 system scan, corrupt files were found that could not be automatically repaired. I was referred to the CBS.Log but have no idea how to read the data therein or how to repair the corrupt files short of performing a clean reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate from my disk. I was told I could use the upgrade feature so as to not lose all of my programs and documents. However, that does not work since Service Pack 1 has already been downloaded and installed, and my installation disk does not have Service Pack 1. Thus I get an error message, telling me that I cannot proceed because the version of Windows 7 I am trying to upgrade to is older than what is already installed. For the disk to work, I would first have to uninstall Service Pack 1, and Windows does not allow me to do that. I am attaching the sfcdetails.zip file from my desktop. I hope it will be useful.

I'm going to need a little more information than you gave. The SFCDetails file has removed a lot of the information I need to create a fix for you, so I need your full CBS folder.

Export CBS folder


  1. Click the Start button :startorb: then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post.

Out of interest, have you used any kind of system optimisation tool such as Advanced System Care?

The errors are occuring because every sample media file (sample music, sample pictures etc) are missing from your system

Yes, I use Advanced System Care. Should I discontinue its use?

Another issue I've noticed recently is that at startup the Windows Action Center frequently tells me that the settings for Windows automatic updates need to be changed so as to allow automatic updates. As far as I know, I have not done anything to cause this to happen and am getting frustrated with seeing this message almost every time I start up my system.

Yes. Please revert all changes it has made to the system - there should be a restore feature. Then uninstall it. It is well known for causing many SFC isssues.

Let's check your update settings out and see if we can fix that whilst we're at it.

Start --> Control Panel --> System And Security --> Turn Automatic Updating On or Off (Under the Windows Update heading).

Send me a screenshot of that window.

To take a screenshot, press the Print Screen button on the top right of the keyboard. This will copy an image of the screen. Paste this into an image editing program such as Paint, and save it. Then attach it to your next post.

Sorry about the delay in responding but I just got home. I tried to upload a screenshot of the Windows update screen. However, I got an error message, stating that it is an invalid file. As for reverting the changes made by Advanced System Care, performing a restore at this point probably wouldn't work because the changes it made were done so too long ago.

I've prepared a fix. It should get everything, but I may have missed one or two things. Hopefully not, but there may be a second part after this. It's quite a big download, so sorry in advance!

SFCFix Script

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.

I trust your exams went well. Thank you for all you have done to help me repair the SFC. I closely followed your instructions for downloading and saving the SFCFix.zip but have been having difficulty saving it to the desktop. WINZIP just wants to extract the zip file and doesn't allow me to save it to the desktop after it is downloaded, or at least I can't figure out how to do it.

Actually, my exams are not until May, but there's a lot of work to be done before then. I have a lot of homework and revision at the moment, and not so much time to spend here. Hence my note in my signature. :)

Anyway, what browser are you using? If you are using Internet Explorer, right click the Dropbox "Download" button and choose "Save Target As"

Hi,

Normally I use Firefox but can try Internet Explorer. While awaiting your reply, I think I succeeded in moving the zip file from the downloads folder to the desktop, after which I dragged the zip icon onto the other one as you instructed. Anyway, I have attached the Notepad results of the scrip processing, although I am not certain if that is what you want to see.

I did drag it to the other shortcut on my desktop, as you told me to do. However, I am not sure if it worked the way it's supposed to. I noticed that that shortcut is shown as only SFCFix and not as SFCFix.exe. Does that matter?
 
Hmm Ok. No, it didn't work how I expected it to.

The fact it doesn't end in .exe doesn't matter.

Please try again and see if it works. The log should say "using a script file...." near the start.

No, it does not say anything about using a script file. However, while awaiting your reply, I performed another scannow. This time it completed the scan and did not find any corrupt files.

By the way, have you ever used Team Viewer to access another computer? I used to have it on my computer from occasions in the past when I needed printer support from HP. I thought it might be a good idea for you to take a look at my computer, unless that is in violation of Sysnative rules.

Posting from my phone so will be a little brief.

Hmmm.. Interesting... Perhaps the fix did work. Can you upload your CBS folder again and the C:\SFCFix folder to your next post (you will need to zip them)

With regards to TeamViewer, yes, I do make frequent use of TeamViewer at home. However, we like to keep all help in the forums so other people can learn from the posts. In some very difficult cases may have to resort to TeamViewer, but we try to avoid it.

I've packed up for tonight (hence why I'm on my phone) so will continue the discussions tomorrow
