Details: Windows 7 32bit - pre service pack

I'm getting error 0x80073712 when trying to run Windows Updates. I downloaded the standalone Service pack 1, tried to install, and it errors out. SFC /scannow also errors. I've also ran the system update readiness tool but still get the same error.

My CheckSUR.log file is showing the following

Checking Component Store
(f) CSI C Mark Deployment Missing 0x00000000 c!mdmusrk1.in..anguagepack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_530a41df7fbe3e2f amd64_mdmusrk1.inf.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_152819b000cbe224

I've attached a zip containing my C:\windows\logs\cbs folder and the Component section of the registry.

Please tell me what else to try. Thanks for any help.

Hello Bain, welcome to Sysnative!

I'm afraid I have some bad news for you! Your registry is damaged beyond repair. In the COMPONENTS export you gave us, here are the only lines:

Code:

It should have hundreds of thousands of lines, so there is a lot of data you are missing! As this data is specific to your computer, we can't re-create it, we have high success rates for more minor registry corruption fixes, but there is simply too much data missing here.

Do you have any backups?

Tom

I'm afraid there aren't any backups from before this problem manifested (over a year ago). The problem I presented is on my dad's computer, and I am working remotely from several states away, otherwise I would have done a format/reload and been done with it some time ago.

My theory is that this began when my dad took his laptop to best buy and asked them to do an in place upgrade from Vista to 7.

Any other thoughts or should I just cut our losses and have him ship it up to me?

Bain

Hi Bain,

With no backups, I'm afraid there's nothing for it but to format and reinstall. A repair install will fail in this scenario due to the scale of the damage, so it's not even worth trying that.

Sorry this wasn't the result you were hoping for!

Tom
