Can't install sound card drivers via Windows Update

I had an amd processor and motherboard
I installed a new intel-based CPU and motherboard, and some new RAM.
All drivers installed smoothly except sound drivers, for both the onboard sound chipset and an addon board.

The two sound drivers found by Windows Update refuse to be installed.
I'm hoping to avoid a reinstall by going through steps with some sfcfix experts.

I've run sfcfix and SURT
