Hi, I've been trying to install kb2976978 for several weeks now, but it fails every time. I'm on Windows 8.1 pro, with all updates installed, except this one. I've searched a lot for a solution, found some and tried them all. All to no avail...

I did sfc /scannow again just now, gave only one error back; something about a corrupted windows wallpaper. It was automatically fixed. Then I tried SFCFix which failed stating the following:

For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Does 'repair source was not found' mean I should have had a Windows repair disk in my drive bay while running SFCFix? And should I post the DISM log here?

I really would appreciate some help here, I have spend so much time trying to find a solution and nothing works. It's driving me crazy (as does a lot of others too, I discovered).

Please zip up and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
If it is too large to attach here, use a file sharing service such as DropBox, OneDrive, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Looks like the log with the last DISM run has been archived.

Let's get a fresh log.

Looks good! :thumbsup2:

Reboot and check for updates, then try to install any that are offered.
If installation fails, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Yeah, I was thinking the same, but sadly, installation of the same patch failed. 8 Others succeeded though.

I am experiencing weird things with the cbs.log. The size of the file is 129 MB, for some reason. I saw this before and had to let Windows create a new one to get a normal sized one, as I have to do now too, apparently...
As you can see this one is way smaller...

That log doesn't contain the information about the failed install, but I do see a DISM run.

Try only installing the update that fails.
As soon as the installation fails, copy CBS.log to your Desktop.
Next, right click on the CBS.log file on your Desktop and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.

If the zip file is smaller than 8mb, attach it with your reply. If it is larger, upload it to a file sharing service such as DropBox, OneDrive, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Let's see if we can find out which assembly is missing.

Capture Process Monitor Trace

  1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
  2. Attempt to install the failing update just like you have in the past.
  3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the install fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar.
  4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
  5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Looks like it's left over from an older version of KB2976978.

Let's try to uninstall it.

Remove Update Manually
  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter.

    wusa /uninstall /KB:2976978

  4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Unfortunately I'm getting an error code: 0X80073701. And the message 'the assembly which is referred to cannot be found' (or something like that, had to translate it)...

Copy Windows8.1-KB2976978-v5-x64.cab to C:\temp\

Elevated Command Prompt

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
  2. Type cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and hold on Command Prompt.
  3. Tap or click Run as administrator.
  4. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\temp\Windows8.1-KB2976978-v5-x64.cab

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  5. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Had to create a temp file, because there wasn't one there. I guess that's no problem, right?

Looks like that might have worked. Reboot and check for updates, then try to install KB2976978 if it is offered.
If the installation fails, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
