My original problem is one many people are/were experiencing after April of 2016, i.e. windows update taking forever or not completing at all. I was up to date through the end of March,2016 on the machine that is causing me the problem. I booted it up today to update windows and here I am with the problem.
One thread says to install a number of updates individually ( 3168965,3145739,3078601,3164033,and 3109094). I started with 3168965. I got to it and clicked open for the download. The Windows Update Standalone Installer then searches for updates on the computer and searches forever. I can't cancel it without doing so via Task Manager. I stopped the Windows update service for this. I tried other individual updates with the same result--- the Standalone Installer keeps searching the computer for updates.

I was able to install kb 3161664 ( a thread suggested this) without a lengthy searching for updates by the standalone installer. Prior to 3161664, my last successful update was for .net 4.6 on 3/20/2016

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named PeterJ. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello and welcome,

  • Download
    myjIXnC.png
SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Double-click SFCFix to launch this program, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

thanks for your reply. I apologize for not responding before this. In the past, I received an email about your reply. I did not get your reply in an email so I did not check my post before this. I have worked with Brian on a problem before. the problem I was having and still have is that I cannot get windows update to give me any updates. I am having this problem on 2 computers. My original post was for an hp pavilion desktop. I left it on overnight a number of days ago ( running windows update) and it was off in the morning. It has some issues rebooting, but is booted now. May I suggest we use the other machine to try to fix it? it is an hp laptop. the last update it got was on 3/27.

Assuming you are ok with using the laptop, I have turned automatic updates to " check for updates" . The windows update service is started. I will now run sfcfix.

I had all but kb3164033. When I ran windows update I got 34 updates. Seems like we are ok for now. is this the monthly patch problem, perhaps?

I am downloading an installing now. I will let you know how it goes.

This is the same set of updates listed in Brian Drab's post on slow windows updates. Does downloading each kb on his list work only if sfcfix shows zero unfixed items?

Ok but what do you mean by running for at least an hour--- the searching that happens initially on each?
Yes. Just start each update and let it complete.

Great.

Hard to say. Best to seek advise or start a thread at this forum.

Good to hear the issue is fixed. Please restore the Windows Update setting:
- Click Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Update > Change Settings.
- Select "Install updates automatically (recommended)" in the list.
- Save all your work en restart the computer.

You can delete SFCFix.exe and it's logfiles if you like.
All the best.
