Can't install IE11

Hi there,

I would really appreciate if someone has any time to look into this little issue I seem to be having while trying to install the new version of IE.

I'm currently during to update to IE 11 from IE10 (which I seem to have upgraded from IE9 at some stage... a long time ago), but I'm having problems. I recently used the 'Clean up system files' option inside the Disk Cleanup tool, but I think it may not have run very successfully as the DeepClean.log is filled with a number of errors.

In attempting to get this issue sorted, I've already fixed a number of (possibly unrelated) corrupt mum/cat issues found by the SUR tool, by downloading the MSUs and letting the SUR tool repair them but it doesn't seem to have helped me get any further installing IE11. I think I've isolated the problem down from the CBS.log file to the following, which looks to be related to a missing assembly:

But from here, I don't really know where to go. IE10 works fine and I don't use it regularly anyway but I like keeping things up to date. I previously tried uninstalling IE10 to see if it would repair the components, but that left me with a hardly functioning version of IE10 (no tabs/address bar), not a working version of IE9, so I rolled back to before the uninstall with system restore.

I've uploaded my cbs folder to dropbox here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7013871/CBS.zip
Along with the isolated errors section from the latest cbs.log in the root of the zip and the IE11.log installer from windir.

Would appreciate any help with this one - I must have spent 10 hours just getting all the MSU files to get to this point - and I'm still having no luck!

Cheers!
Matt

Hi Matt, welcome to Sysnative!

Thanks for starting a new thread, it's much easier to help here than via PM.

I've created the first of what I suspect to be many fixes, but this will determine the severity of your problem. This will address the missing package listed in your CheckSUR log, but there are two other issues in the CBS log which we will need to deal with afterwards:

Code:
2013-11-20 16:38:11, Error CBS Failed to parse package manifest: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\Package_for_KB2656373~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
2013-11-20 16:38:11, Error CBS Failed to resolve package 'Package_for_KB2656373~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0' [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Hi Tom,

Thanks a lot for the assistance! To maybe help speed things up a bit, here's the same sections from CheckSUR and CBS.log after running the SURT and the IE11 installer again:

The full CBS link is available here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7013871/CBS.v2.zip

I also found this in the DeepClean.log:
Code:
2013-10-10 20:40:40, Info CBS Package_for_KB2656373~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0 superseded - uninstalled

Which appears as though it's mostly uninstalled anyway? Is it possible to simply remove the references to this package somewhere so it doesn't check for it?

Thanks again for your help. Please don't feel there's any rush to get back to this one - it's not critical, as everything still functions fine!

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the logs, and for taking the time to break it up into the relevant sections. It's great to see you researching this as well! Though I haven't run into this problem before, it looks like it's a registry problem so let's have a look:

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Zip up this file, upload it to Dropbox and send me the link please.

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    dir /b %windir%\servicing\Packages > %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.txt

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please attach this to your next post.
