[SOLVED] Cannot update to Win-7 SP1

I have Win-7 Pro. It installs all updates successfully except the SP1. Gives an error message 80004005. I tried to reformat the hard drive and install Win-7 SP1 from a MS supplied DVD. Booted it from the DVD and proceeded to do a fresh install. It failed after about 20% of the "Expansion of Windows Files" stage with an error message as follows "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupted or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart".
I assumed that I might have a bad HD. Replaced it with a new hard drive and got the same error as above. Restored my computer from my back up and the old hard drive. Ran a SFC /Scannow. It stopped at 39% with the message that it cannot perform the requested operation. Repeated in safe mode. It stopped at 39% with the same message.
Ran the SFCfix. The text file is copied below. I have the CBS.zip on the desktop, but I am not able to upload it as required by the instructions. The upload icon goes round and quits after a minute or so.

I'll try your alternate method. Hope that works and the CBS.zip follows OK
Thanks for your help

Hi n2b,

Do you still need assistance with this issue?

Hi n2b,

Do you still need assistance with this issue?

Yes. I am still waiting for your analysis of the cbs.zip file I sent you and hopefully a recommendation to solve the problem
Thanks
n2b

Do you have a retail product key for Windows 7?

Edited your post to remove the product key. Never, ever post your product key on the Internet as someone could use it. Since your installation media is corrupt, did you try to download a fresh Windows 7 SP1 .iso from the Microsoft Software Recovery Center?

Windows 7

Yes, I did. Here is a list of my attempts which have not succeeded so far.

  • All MS updates load successfully except the SP1 update. It gives an error message #80004005
  • Tried to do SP1 update after doing a clean boot -- Same error message as above
  • Ran a check disc -- Passed with no errors.
  • Tried to do a SFC /Scannow. -- It hangs up at around 39% with a message that Windows cannot fix the errors. Does not say what errors.
  • Tried to do a SFC /Scannow in Safe Mode -- Same message as above.
  • Booted up the computer from my original Win-7 (32 bit) DVD to do a fresh install. -- When it reached half way into expanding the files it gave an error message saying "Your files are either corrupted or missing, try installing it again....."
  • I had Microsoft send me a new Win-7 SP1 (32 bit) DVD. I booted the computer from this DVD. -- Same message as above
  • I thought I might have a bad HD. Did a detailed scan of the HD with Seatools from Seagate -- passed with no errors
  • Tried again after reformatting the HD -- When it reached half way into expanding the files it gave an error message saying "Your files are either corrupted or missing, try installing it again....."
  • Tried with a new HD -- same message as above
  • Asked MS tech support for help in diagnosing the problem. No luck.
  • Tech Support downloaded a Win-7 SP1 (64 bit). Converted the ISO to a DVD. -- After booting from the DVD When it reached half way into expanding the files it gave an error message saying "Your files are either corrupted or missing, try installing it again....."
  • Checked for the latest BIOS version. Its the latest available from ASUS
  • Did a processor check from the Intel tools -- passed with no problems
  • All my drivers are up to date and there are no "yellow icons" in the Device Manager list

Now what?? I am hoping that you will have a clue after reviewing the results of the SFCfix. What did the CBS.zip tell you. Anything meaningful?
Surprising thing is that after doing all this stuff to the HD, I can successfully load the Win-7 from my backup and the computer runs fine. Except that I cannot get to SP1 and without that I am unable to upgrade to Win-10

Well your CheckSUR.log tells me that two Registry keys needs to be adjusted, and one payload needs to be replaced, so here goes.

Sorry about that. I'm not sure what I did incorrectly last time. Here is what I did this time. Downloaded the SFCFix.zip link shown at the bottom of your instructions and put it on the desk top. Downloaded the SFCFix link shown in the first bullet of the instructions and put the SFCFix.exe on the desk top. Dragged the SFCFix.zip into the SFCFix.exe which resulted in the text file copied below.

Thanks for taking time to help me fix this.

Awesome! Now let's run SFC to get a better report of the missing payloads (and if there's more than one).

EndqYRa.png
System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

I ran the sfc /scannow as you directed above. The verification stopped at 39% like it used to before. In any case I am sending you the link to the cbs.txt. I am also including a link to the screen print of the cmd page where it stopped at 39% with the message that it could not perform the requested operation.

Looking forward to your analysis of this data. Thanks again for spending so much time on this one problem. Appreciate it
