Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll file

Hi all,

I've spent all day trying to upgrade to windows 10 but keep running into problem after problem, I've been trying to narrow down what exactly the issue is but can't even use any troubleshooting programs to find solutions. This has led me to use the System File Checker Tool and find "Cannot repair member file" messages for 4 .dll files:

fde.dll
fdeploy.dll
gptext.dll
gpedit.dll

I have no idea where to go next with this, if anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

I use Windows 7 Home Premium - Service Pack 1

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I've had to change user on my PC since my previous Admin user was corrupted, which is likely where all this could have stemmed from. Let me know if it's necessary for me to change back to the other one however.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Yikes! Not something I'd seen before. Can you do a system restore to an earlier point?

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Sadly I dont have a restore point made, any other ideas? Unless there's a way to restore without me having made one manually.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.

2. Copy it to your USB drive.
3. Boot to recovery environment.
4. Launch CMD and launch FRST64.exe from the USB.
5. Press Scan button.
6. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the USB)
7. Please attach the log back here.

Please note that there is no guarantee that I will be able to help you, but I will try.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Do you mean do this from another computer? Because the issue is that i literally can't use my pc right now due to the error message. Can't even run safe mode.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Okay, could you clarify that third step for me? I'm not getting what you mean by it

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Or rather, the third point on the first step. Also, the other device has Windows 10, will that be an issue in any Way?

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

What command is it I use in CMD to launch FRST64.exe? Sorry, I'm not all that used to using it.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

E:\FRST.exe where E: is your USB. Change the letter accordingly if needed.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

15266074223771267210568.jpg Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm certain it's F: for the port I have the USB plugged into.

EDIT: nvm, forgot the 64 part.

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Oops, my bad, I should have written FRST64.exe since this is a 64 Bit system! Apologies!

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Alright, here it is

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Good. Download the attached file and put it on the root of your USB. Launch FRST like you just did, but this time press Fix.Wait for it to finish and try rebooting.
I'm extremely tired as I've been up for 26 hours straight and I need some sleep. Be with you when I wake up! Good night!

Re: Cannot Troubleshoot Windows Update or Upgrade to Windows 10. "Cannot Repair" dll

Alright, I should probably get some sleep too to be fair lol. I appreciate your time man!

Sadly that didn't solve the issue, I'll leave the fixlog here eitherway.

Also, this was the error message I got when the upgrade failed, maybe that could help narrow down what this is?
