This is a dual-boot system with Windows on my HDD (+ some data partitions) and Ubuntu on SSD.
Windows upgrade, through Windows update or ISO on bootable usb, throws error 0x800703ee.

Here is my disk configuration : . The 438Go and 109Go are data partitions (respectively, Windows data as NTFS and Ubuntu /home as ext4)

I cannot reset because "no winRE environment found", I'm stuck !
I have a lot of disk space available (> 20Go) and even freed >60Go to try and see if that was the problem. I also tried upsizing my efi partition, but didn't fix the problem.

Thanks

I do ! Ubuntu is my main OS but I need Windows 10 for the scientific applications I can't run using Wine.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Okay, let me tell you my whole story to guide your search.

I had a perfectly functioning Windows / Ubuntu install, Windows on SSD and Ubuntu on HDD. I swapped the two by copying the partitions and everything broke down, I had to repair Windows by booting an iso and struggling for days with the efi partition to rebuild it (I had deleted it when playing with the partitions...), the bootable USB didn't detect my Windows - still doesn't - and I have to get through a step of mounting the partition with diskpart every time I use the USB to try and repair my install.

Anyway, after this, I had to do at least a dozen passes of dism/sfc's, from Win itself and from a bootable USB, to make it stable again. My user profile got corrupted and I couldn't find a way to repair it so I created a new user, and here we are. I can bet that my current problem is still related to the boot setup / efi partition, but all my searches online lead to nothing, and having only a student Microsoft account, I can't contact the official support, so here I am, in the hope that making that last step (upgrade Windows) to repair it completely :)

I ran another sfc and here is the CBS log file, but I'm pretty sure it is "normal". My problem is probably subtle (though I may be completely wrong) and I hope the trained eye of yours can spot the weird stuff in the logs. Thanks for helping.

I think I do. It was 500MBs at first but I upsized it to 1GB, having found this fix on various forums before. Any simple way to check for sure ?

I swapped because I needed Ubuntu on the SSD, as I use it most and it was very slow on the HDD. I didn't make a backup before swapping, so re-swapping would just make things worse at this point

Well, the problem is I have a lot of applications that are installed that I couldn't reinstall (don't have the installers) and that can't run from the files themselves, throwing errors probably because they have missing AppData and registry settings and other application-specific stuff they need. Reinstalling would probably make my Windows install useless, because my apps are weird scientific apps that aren't designed for the general public and aren't developped to be resilient.

But how do they expect for them to work? You can't use the same PC for 15 years... There can be software/and or hardware issues requiring a reinstall.

They work well and can be reinstalled if you have the correct installer, which I don't because it's been a while, I didn't keep them around not thinking it could be helpful in the future. I have had them for years and they're not available on the internet because, well, researchers. It's probably pretty bad Fortran, but nonetheless I'm stuck with them and now I need to find a solution to repair Windows or reinstall without breaking the current installed software infrastructure... :'(
Thanks for dedicating time to me and bearing with me, it's the only forums where I can find constructive questions and help :)

Doing a backup rn online on a free trial account, we have 15 days from now on until it expires...
Let's make that system stable !

Not a big problem, some update-grub and some uefi boot order change if needed and I'll be good to go ;-)
