I play golf on GameRanger.com. Just coming off of a long break playing there and for the past month or two been trying to figure out why I can't connect with anybody to play (no problem getting to game room where you yack etc before launching game). Upon launching I never can connect with opponents just get rejected back to game room. I think the problem may be a system file or two corrupt or missing as up until Jan 2014 I used various registry cleaners in an effort to make computer run faster and better -- BIG mistake IMO. My guess is that may have been around the time I couldn't connect on the golf game (although I didn't know it then as I was in a long break of playing online live - mainly just playing offline and then sending final score to LSPN server (a Links 2003 game site). I have Vista64, Norton Internet Security 2014, 2Wire 3600HGV router.

With the basics of my problem said I'm going to put the links below of the forum threads I started to try and solve this problem along with some related threads of other problems which might help get a handle on this (one or two may say "Solved" but not so).

https://community.norton.com/forums/gameranger-wont-let-me-play-links-2003 (the last thread of this list)

https://community.norton.com/forums/port-forwarding-remote-port-settings-disappearing (I thought this was the reason for me not being able to play online)

The below links MIGHT be related - don't know but believe this was caused by the overuse of reg cleaners.
WMP11 doesn't work at all - Microsoft Community
Silverlight 5 not working on IE9 Vista64 - Microsoft Community
https://forums.adobe.com/message/6466038

Hope some of these will help solve this problem.

Re: Cannot play online game but think it may be system file(s) corrupt, missing etc

Hi Pappy1943,

First let me say that I am happy that you realized that the registry cleaners aren't the best. I would like to know if you have any registry cleaners are still on your computer? If so can you post then in your next reply.

I would also like to know if you have tried shutting off your norton, to see if that makes a difference? If you have what are the results? I think that once we have your computer cleaned up a little bit then you should be all set to go.

Cheers!

Hi Pappy1943,

First let me say that I am happy that you realized that the registry cleaners aren't the best. I would like to know if you have any registry cleaners are still on your computer? If so can you post then in your next reply. No reg cleaners for almost a year now- have ccleaner which I don't use as that- just dealing with cookies, temps etc.

I would also like to know if you have tried shutting off your norton, to see if that makes a difference? If you have what are the results?. Yes in the last Norton thread I uninstalled Internet Security totally (with their uninstall tool); after that put router in DMZ; made sure windows firewall was off - still no connection (needless to say didn't do any browsing except for that check :grin1: ). Fyi AT&t said they weren't blocking my ports.

Cheers!

Hi,

First, I would like you to turn on your firewall in Vista as a minimum, I would hate for you to get infected and then we would have another problem on our hands. I just had a look at the Game Ranger website, it looks like you have to download and install a program from their website. Have you tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. After you unistall the program make sure you restart your computer, that will finish the uninstall process most times. I would like to see if that works because that normally fixes any registry problems with the program.

Re: Cannot play online game but think it may be system file(s) corrupt, missing etc

Knew I forgot to mention something (maybe that 's why I put up threads pertaining to this and maybe related stuff). In the last Norton thread I was requested to uninstall Norton IS; dmz the router; etc (mentioned above) but ALSO at the same time uninstall the GameRanger program installed (I made sure windows firewall was off only to make sure that wasn't in the picture also). I then rebooted and then reinstalled only GameRanger (pretty sure their website clean - wasn't infected anyway) and still was a negative on trying to connect to play (when host launches I can launch but can go no further - get dropped).
Now there is one thing I was thinking about that never came up. I used sfc /scannow many times now (dream about it) caught a couple system files which has since been fixed (got the idea off of your forum when I googled the problem - which is mentioned in last Norton thread I believe too complicated to try to describe but it didn't help suffice to say- and that's how I found this site - was impressed). Anyway I was wondering if even after an SFC scan etc if there could be system file (or 2 or more) in my computer that hasn't been registered (or lost registration) and so SFC doesn't see it but still missing some files. Is there a way to check for that (I added a couple of threads with MS pertaining to WMP and Silverlight not working on IE9). Although I don't recall the MS techs mentioning that (except do a repair which I don't have a repair disk just D: drive.

Boy what a ramble hope you made sense of all of that. Pete

Hi,

Yes it is possible that something could be missing a file or something. If you could give me the most recent log for your sfc scan, that would be great. I am also going to ask a colleague to have a look at this because I'm as good as I used to be with missing files.

Hello Pete,

Download and Run SFCFix

Please download and run SFCFix from >Here<

It will take about 15 minutes to process. Once the scan has completed a notepad file will launch with the results. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the results and post them back into this thread. Please put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Interesting info about the sidebar corruption issue - thanks for that. It appears (at least in my eyes) that this is a clean log. Again my question is what about missing system files? Don't I need original disc, which I don't have, just the D: recovery partition which is not a fix IMO.

No the original disc is not much help unless the system files that are corrupt are from the original install of the OS, there are two settings files that need to be repaired.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

 1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
 2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.

Anyway I was wondering if even after an SFC scan etc if there could be system file (or 2 or more) in my computer that hasn't been registered (or lost registration) and so SFC doesn't see it but still missing some files.

Short answer, no. SFC uses a large database on your computer to verify the contents of every system file and system folder inside WinSxS.

Thanks for fixing the corrupted sidebar.ini GTP - at least I won't have to see it in any future sfc scans as I won't be using the sidebar (haven't in years - I always had to look at that corrupted sidebar.ini issue :). Well then maybe it's a missing system file - probably have to reinstall OS which I don't plan on doing. Would that be the consensus?

The sidebar.ini file was the file that SFC reported as a missing/corrupt System file.

I used various registry cleaners in an effort to make computer run faster and better -- BIG mistake IMO.

Agreed, this is a big mistake. These registry cleaners can often cause a lot more damage than good.

Lets see if we can get this game working for you :)

What browser are using to launch this game?
Do you know if the game is flash or java based?
Or is this from an installed program on your computer?

Browser: IE9
Gameranger requires flash - I keep updated vs 16 now (source: How to install adobe flash player? I can't run Gameranger because it k - Windows 7 Help Forums )
Playing using installed game on my computer: Links 2003 (old golf game from 2002)

Now I went in to check network connections as I was planning on changing my static ip to a higher ip address thinking maybe some other devices (Nook, Kindle, Wii, etc) might have taken that address and preventing connection with static ip address. Do you know when using static ip if dhcp "saves" it for static ip? Also while in Network settings noticed that both IPv4 and IPv6 were checked but only v4 had my port forwarding info in it (static ip etc). I googled and MS says even if not used DO NOT uncheck v6 - may cause problems (so I'm not). But when I did a test on this site- IPv6 test - IPv6/4 connectivity and speed test said ipv4 NOT SUPPORTED and ipv6 SUPPORTED. Don't know what all of that means - just want to throw that out in case this means anything. Hope this info helped. (OS is Vista64 Home)
