Have tried over 20 times to install Windows 10. The problem is I get "Modern Setup Host has stopped" error and it closes the update. I have turned everything off in StartUp, I downloaded Tweaking.com Windows Repair Tool and ran through all the steps to bring back to default all settings. When this error occurs I have checked Task Manager and see that it is still listed, but all activity has stopped.
Other forums have suggested:
- to free up at least 10 Gig of drive space - I have over 500G of free space so that's not the problem.
- to run C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows\sources\setupprep.exe when error occurs - done that and nothing changes.

I have used the update icon to download Win10 - same result
I have used Media Creation Tool - it gets to the same point and Modern Setup Error happens
I burned the iso and start the install and it gets to the same point and Modern Setup Error happens
I tried both download updates during install and skip download update - it gets to the same point and Modern Setup Error happens

Can someone please help?

I am running 8.1 Pro.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this problem and any possible solution?

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Results: (Some of the errors (ie Outlook) may have been caused because I turned off virtually everything I could to see if Win10 would install. When I went to open somne things afterwards, I had to go back and enable these)

Is this an easy way out?
Question: If I wanted to install a new clean drive (c:) in my system and install a clean version of Win10 on it, would I be able to still access my programs on the old C: (now D: drive). I know the files would be accessible, but could I also run the programs without reinstalling them in the new drive?
What would be the easiest way to do this?
How to Dual-Boot Windows 10 with Windows 7 or 8 or would I have to dual-boot?

Currently running 8.1 - I have Win10 iso disk. Would I have to reinstall 8 before going to 10?

Have you tried creating another user account and running the Media Creation Tool again from that account?

No, you usually cannot run your programs from the Windows 8.1 install in a separate Windows 10 install.

I created another admin account, rebooted, and ran the install from the iso download: accepted license (OK), getting updates (OK), Making sure you're ready to install (Modern Setup error again!)

c:\windows\system32\drivers\vcsvad.sys

Try uninstalling the AVNEX Virtual Audio Cable

I uninstalled the program and ran the iso - it was at "making sure you're Ready" for a long time and there was the most CPU activity that I've seen yet (about 20%) then... Modern Stopped.
I'm going to reboot and try one more time. It was encouraging that it stayed alive for so long!
