I have a Windows 10 machine that stubbornly will not
  • install the feature update to Windows 10 version 1803
  • in fact install any update, they all are "not applicable to this machine"

Tried the checklist and everything comes up clean but without error. Something seems very weird as seen by:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /online /get-packages

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.15063.0

Image Version: 10.0.15063.0

Packages listing:

The operation completed successfully.

Where there should be more than 3 packages...

I'm really not sure what is wrong and what to try :(

Would be very interested to know what to fix and how the CBS.log files help identify this.

Hello and welcome!

Please do the following and then try upgrading to 1803 again.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
    Code:
tags around the log to break up the text.

I applied the fix which replaces the servicing stack and it appeared successfully applied. However comparing the contents of the files shows that nothing was actually changed.

The problem still remains the same

So I
  1. Restarted computer
  2. Ran Windows update Troubleshooter
  3. Ran "sfc /scannow" which continues to run without error "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
  4. Ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" which completes successfully "The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully."
  5. Ran SFCFix which runs without complaint
  6. Uploaded View attachment SFCFix.txt from applying the fix in the previous post
  7. Uploaded CBS Logs as View attachment CBS.zip

Can you please attempt the upgrade again and after it fails (it likely will), please attach setuperr.log and setupact.log? This will help me determine at what exact point the upgrade is failing. It may be a good idea to get the iso, so you don't have to re-download the iso every time you attempt the upgrade :)

I'm accessing the computer remotely, so I tried something simpler, KB4343885 to update to the current build of 1703 from 15063.726 to 15063.1266 by command

wusa /log:logme.txt windows10.0-kb4343885-x64_6c70fb3e65e5511a4d97ee72e829ffa40cb07f43.msu

This fails quickly with "The update is not applicable to your computer". I have attached the log files from wusa as View attachment Downloads.zip

I tried (on-site) a Windows Upgrade (keeping all user files and applications) and it fails almost immediately as well.

Does DISM return an error when you run it?

Please provide a screenshot of Disk Management when able.

Also, do the following, so I can gather more info:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

From Settings->Updates it says something like "Your device is at risk because it's out of date and missing important security and quality updates. Let's get you back on track so Windows can run more securely. Select this button to get going:" and press "update". Lately I get it wanting to install a Windows Defender update, which it appears to do and then it checks again and then fails. Then restart and it goes through the same motions, Install a Windows Defender update (same one), then check again and fail.

When I look in the previously installed updates the Feature Update to 1803 appears and has repeatedly failed. (However nothing appears now as I tried resetting Windows Update by removing the Database directory or similar).

Nevertheless I get consistent failures at either upgrading to Feature Update 1803 or trying to install a Windows update to the latest version of 17.03

Open CMD and copy paste the following:

Code:
cmd /c dir /s /A %systemroot%\servicing\version >"%userprofile%\desktop\servicing.txt"

Attach servicing.txt that will appear on your Desktop.

Command output:

I tried installing KB4132649 x64 (Servicing stack update for Windows 10 Version 1703) as instructed but the install failed, like all others as "Not applicable".

I also tried booting without Driver Signing turned off and also created another new administrator user to see if that made any difference with the same result.
