I was having an issue with my laptop and had to use an old restore point to fix it. Now I have everything back to what seems like normal, I need to update Windows. There are 89 updates. I didn't want to try them all at once, so I tried a small bunch. After 90 minutes I knew it wasn't updating. So I cancelled the download, restarted the laptop and tried 1 update. After 20 minutes I realized it was not going to update either so I am turning to you for help.

I had a similar issue about a year ago and you were very helpful and walked me through running a program I believe was called SURT. Anyway, with your help, the issue was resolved. I don't know if that is the help I need now or not. If so, I will need to be spoonfed what to do again.

I have run the Microsoft Fix it, but it didn't fix it. Your help again will be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. If you are still in need of assistance please start with the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks for getting back to me. I ran the scan and it said there were errors it couldn't fix. I then ran the code for copying the file, but it wouldn't copy. Here is a screen shot of what I did. Please note that I first ran the copy code exactly as you had it. It gave me an error so I then thought that maybe you didn't intend for me to use the word "copy", so I ran it again without "copy" and received a different error.

If you can figure out how I can copy the log, please let me know and I'll get it to you. I appreciate your help.

I'm not sure you can read this. If not, let me know and I'll send it thru Dropbox. Hopefully it will be at the same size and not reduced.

That's very weird. Just browse to c:\windows\logs\cbs and then right-click on the CBS.log file and select Copy and then right-click on your desktop and choose paste. This should put the CBS.log file on your desktop. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named CBS.zip. Please attach this in your next post.

Thanks for the info. Please do the following.

Download the FixIt from the link below and run it in Aggressive mode. Once it completes, reboot your machine and then check for Windows Updates. The first time you check for updates it will take a long time since we will need to rebuild the update cache. Please let it complete. Let it run until it shows updates that need installed.

Thanks.

I'm beginning to feel like the guy in the cartoons that walks around with a dark cloud hanging over him all of the time. This would be funny if it weren't so serious.

I downloaded Fix it from the website. I clicked on Aggressive. While it was creating a restore point, I received an error message. I've attached here. It says:
" The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2738."

Thanks.

OK, please do the following.

FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

It doesn't appear that you attached the correct FRST.txt file. Please right-click on this file on your desktop and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named FRST.zip. Please attach this.

Thanks. A couple of things I would like to do based on your logs. Let's first start with the following.

Although the chances are extremely rare that any data loss will occur, it's still a good idea to ensure that any of your critical documents are backed up.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Repair
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk /R and then press enter. Note: There is a space after the command chkdsk and before the forward slash
6. You will get a prompt telling you chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use. Answer Y and hit enter to schedule the run at next boot.
7. Reboot your computer and chkdsk will run. Let it complete please.
8. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.[/COLOR]
9. Right-click ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Wouldn't run. Received the following error message:

It occured while trying to establish a restore point.

Deleted all restore points. Created a new restore point. Tried to run Fix It and received the same error message.
