I have been having problems downloading updates, and after trying other remedies, I have decided to ask for your help. I have run the SFCFix program, and attach the SFCFix.txt file as requested. My computer was purchased with windows 8.1 installed, so I do not have a disc. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. There are about 30 open threads currently and we try to work through them oldest to newest. There are very few of us helpers and we all volunteer our personal time so it's not always easy to get to them promptly. Good news is that we finally made it to yours. :smile9: Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Check for Corruption
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Items for your next post

The link you provided only had cbs.txt. I still need the sfcfix.txt file.

I can't use my email for this. You may want to try SendSpace as it may be easier for you to use.

Also, it doesn't appear that Step#2 was done correctly. When you started the sfc /scannow you should have seen something like the following. Did you?

Yes! You did it correctly however I see a ton of corruptions. Please do the following which may give us a better idea.

Step#1 - SFCFix Analyze
1. Download SFCFix.exe and save this to your Desktop. If you already have this downloaded there is no need to re-download.
2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
3. Double click on SFCFix.exe to open it.
4. Follow all on screen instructions and upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop named SFCFix.txt.
5. Please post the contents of this log in your next post. Thank you.

This is what I feared. Way too many corruptions to attempt to fix manually. As you have Windows 8, there are built in options to Refresh or Reset your computer. The downside of these is that you will lose any programs that you have installed since you purchased the machine. Since you don't have a CD/DVD would you like to try these options? If so please make sure you have a backup of all your important data before we get started.

Code:

I have had to do this before, and the time it took me to replace everything I lost was astronomical. If I purchase a Windows 8.1 disk, can I repair these problems without loosing all my programs ? If I can, then I will go this route. Thanks for your help.

I understand. What concerns me though is how it got this corrupt. Usually it's a sign of a failing hard-drive and/or RAM. We can check both if you wish. I would hate to see you go through all of this just to find out that it corrupts again.

Yes you can do a repair install with Windows 8. There are many articles on how to do this. Following is an example of a good one.
https://www.winhelp.us/repair-your-computer-in-windows-8.html

You should be able to contact HP for replacement Windows 8 media. Although you will have to pay for it, it should be less than buying a new copy.

Also you may be able so simply download the media instead of re-purchasing it. If you look at the 2nd post at this link, it may provide a way.

Keep in mind that you currently have Windows 8 and not 8.1. You will have to repair with Windows 8 and then you can do the free update to Windows 8.1 which I highly recommend.

I'll be here through the process...just keep me updated on what you intend on doing.

OK, lets check the hard drive & RAM. The computer is only 1 year old & I would hate to think that it has these problems. Lets find out please.

If it's only a year old, is it still under warranty?

First thing I would like to do is a chkdsk.

ChkDsk
1. Point your mouse to the lower left of your computer screen and click on the Start screen. Type cmd on the Start Screen.
2. Once the Command Prompt program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator.
3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Let it complete please.
7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Test RAM With Memtest86+

Please ensure you allow 8 passes of the program!

Download Memtest86+ here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Which should I download?

You can either download the pre-compiled .ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).

Do note that some older generation motherboards do not support USB-based booting, therefore your only option is CD (or Floppy if you really wanted to).

How Memtest works (you don't need to read, it's only for those interested in the specifics):

Memtest uses algorithms (specifically two), namely moving inversion & what is deemed Modulo-X. Essentially, the first algorithm fills the memory with a pattern. Starting at the low address, it checks to see if the pattern was changed (it should not have been), writes the patterns complement, increments the address, and repeats. Starting at the highest address (as opposed to the lowest), it follows the same checklist.

The reason for the second algorithm is due to a few limitations, with the first being that not all adjacent cells are being tested for interaction due to modern chips being 4 to 16 bits wide regarding data storage. With that said, patterns are used to go ahead and ensure that all adjacent cells have at least been written with all possible one and zero combinations.

The second is that caching, buffering and out of order execution will interfere with the moving inversions algorithm. However, the second algorithm used is not affected by this. For starting offsets of 0-20, the algorithm will write every 20th location with a pattern, write all other locations with the patterns complement, repeat the previous one (or more) times, and then check every 20th location for the previously mentioned pattern.

Now that you know how Memtest actually works, it's important to know that the tests it goes through all mean something different. It goes from Test 0 through Test 12, many of which use either one or the other algorithm discussed above, among many other things.

Any other questions, they can most likely be answered by reading this great guide here:

Hi, I have not run the Memtest yet as it is quite confusing. However, I did the following which resulted from some earlier tests that I had done. First, I ran https://www.dropbox.com/s/jgehg89tuygioal/WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab?dl=0 which I got from my computer to check windows update errors. Then I re-ran SFCFix.exe and I now attach the resulting SFCFix.txt file https://www.dropbox.com/s/nqp5rz8g53zhv9b/SFCFix.txt?dl=0 which shows only 1 error. Why should I get these results when the previous SFCFix.txt file showed so many errors ?? Sorry to keep bothering you, but I am a bit perplexed by the differences, and also I do not think my computer has that many errors on it, but I may be wrong. Thanks.

You know what? I wonder if the fact that the bad memory stick was in the computer was actually causing the machine to think there were all those 6,000+ corruptions. To verify that, please do the following.

Step#1 - Check for Corruption
