by accident I changed windows cursors folder

Sorry but I don't know what you mean by Windows cursors folder. Do you mean the mouse pointers?

Hi.

(c:\windows\cursors is the folder in object, and it's present on windows 10 and it seems also in windows 8/8.1... On 7, vista, xp, etc, I'm not sure)

Five methods (choose the one you prefer, I've tried to put the simpler ones first):
1) Use the backup I said to create in your previous thread
2) Try the usual command to be run from an elevated command prompt (although I'm not very sure it will work): dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
3) Copy the entire folder from another windows 8/8.1 machine (same version, if possible: win8pro updated to win8pro updated, win8.1home not updated to win8.1home not updated, and so forth)
4) Ask a friend of yours to copy it and send it to you (also in this forum, maybe someone has got your same version)
5) Download/create the windows 8/8.1 media from MS link I gave you in your previous thread and extract that folder (yes, it should be possible...)

I'm using win10x64home, but you can try to use this as the very last resource: win10x64home - cursors folder (click) - click on slow download.

Files' and directories' owner: NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller.

Permissions (at least on my system):
Full control --> trustedinstaller, system, administrators, creator owner
Read & execute --> users, all applications package (translated from Italian, sorry)
Modify --> system and administrators (this folder only)

Thanks but it said I need permission to perform this action. I can install windows 8.1 but it will take a lot of time ..

Who/whom did say you need permissions? And to do what?
If you already have windows 8.1 cd, you could use it to extract that folder (this is the better method, but a bit complicated).

But now are you using windows 8 and are you going to install 8.1? If so, that should fix it...

Windows probably wants you own the destination cursors folder (then if your windows user is an administrator you can overwrite the destination folder).

Before you try the following procedure:
- What folder are you using to replace your cursors folder?
- Wait sysnative moderators/administrators to confirm the procedure!

  1. (Without complicated commands) You can right click the c:\windows\cursors folder, security tab, click advanced, near the owner you can click change, and you should insert your (exact!) username to own the folder.
  2. Copy the content from the source folder to the destination folder
  3. Replace the owner with nt service\trustedinstaller.

I am at windows 8.1 and was there.

I saw I should get into safe mode and then change the files.

By the way, can you tell me how to extract the Cursors folder from the ISO of windows 8.1 or from the disk I created?

Thank you my friend!

I found some install.esd and found the cursors folder. Going to boot into safe mode and restore that... :)

Hi,

I think I solved it.

I couldn't changed it in safe mode I think I ruined Security settings. How to I restore the security settings?

I moved all files by booting to windows installation and then open Command Prompt and did the magic

Security settings of windows\cursors folder only?
I wrote them in the 4th post although I didn't have time to edit the post (15 minutes) and insert something...:

Permissions (at least on my system win10):
Full control --> trustedinstaller (this folder and subfolders)
