Hey guys,

Hope you can help with something really weird.

----------------------------
Background:
----------------------------
1) Have been using Dell M4600 mobile workstation for almost a year now without any probs

2) Everything was OK until yesterday when all of a sudden I got my very first BSOD unexpectedly when browsing

3) OS: Windows 7, 16 G of RAM, not overclocked

----------------------------
Problem:
----------------------------
1) Nearly every single time (99%) I reboot I am getting BSOD without even getting to the logon screen. The BSODs are happenning at approximately the time when Windows logo gets assembled in the start-up screen I get a quick BSOD and immediate reboot

2) The funny thing is a few times I managed get to Windows logon screen, where I could login and then immediate BSOD after that

3) I tried safe mode a few times - logs in, then I can do basic things, then BSOD again in 1 minute or so

4) A few times I saw a message saying dump files have been created - not always

5) Tested memory extensively, removed 3 out 4 memory blocks, changed slots, etc. Memory appears to be OK

6) It's not my SSD either because I have original HDD which my notebook came with with another Windows 7 on it. I swapped SSD and installed original HDD, same blue screens but this time can't even get to the login screen and can't use safe mode either (however as I mentioned before I think safe mode worked a few times with SSD).

7) Attached are the dump files which I got from my SSD

Please help.

Thanks very much for your fantastic help!

Dave

Crashes are all over the map. Normally, I would attribute what you describe to a corrupted Windows installation or corrupted Windows registry and suggest using the backup registry to restore, but since this happens on two drives, that probably rules that out. One question, though: When was Windows last installed on the hard disk drive that you replaced the solid state drive with?

Have you tried resetting BIOS hardware/software connections?

  • Shut down and turn off the computer.
  • Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
  • "Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English)).
  • Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
  • (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard, and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
  • Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware.

I also recommend you update/replace/remove the following drivers once you are able to log in:

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

First of all, thanks very much for your help.

Answering your questions:

One question, though: When was Windows last installed on the hard disk drive that you replaced the solid state drive with?

It was installed even earlier, than the one on the SSD drive.

Have you tried resetting BIOS hardware/software connections?

Just tried it. Didn't help.

Any other ideas, does it look like it's a major hardware problem? I mean given that I tried 2 systems (both Windows 7, one on SSD and another on HDD which used to work) what else could it be?

Thanks!

Are the crashes identical on both drives? Any chance we could get the .dmps from the hard disk drive crashes?

It might reveal something having crashes from both drives to compare.

They are not identical. Just swapped them back (SSD is back). Can log on to Windows 95% of time in safe mode. Then it might die at any moment after that. Managed to log in a few times without safe mode - was dying very fast. Definitely works longer in safe mode before BSODs.

Also, it appears there might be some problems with the power. It's weird but yesterday when I was playing plugging in power adapter the indicator would start blinking. Today everything seems to be OK with the battery indicator.

Thanks.

Sounds like there may have been a power surge within the system. Do you plug directly into the wall, or do you use a surge protector?

If you move your power supply around, do you lose power to the system? I have seen problems like what you describe when a power cord has a broken connection within the wiring.

Direct connection to the wall. No probs with losing power or something like that.

Just tried something else. Using my HDD tried to reinstall Windows 7: failed. At some point I got a blue screen. Just tried again and the error I am getting just in the beginning of installation is: STOP: 0x0000007E

Doesn't make any sense to me. Could it be motherboard?

That may indicate a hardware incompatibility. Is the RAM installed the same RAM the system came with?
