Dear the Moderator,

My PC always run into BSOD almost 5 or more times a day! Please help to fix it. I attach the 2 files for examination.

My PCc is as follows:

· OS Windows 8
· x64 ?

· What was original installed OS on system: I built it from scratch, no pre-installed OS

· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system): NO or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer): NO. I built it from scratch and install Windows 8 x64 from a DVD borrowed from one of my mates.

· Age of system (hardware): 3 years

· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS?: I installed Windows 7 when bought my PC in 2010 then install Windows 8 (clean install) in Sep 2013

· CPU: Intel Core i7 Processor LGA1366

· Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 460

· MotherBoard: GA-X58A-UD3R v.2.0

· Power Supply - brand & wattage: Corsair TX650W

· System Manufacturer: I buit it with different parts from different manufacturers: Gigabyte (Motherboard + Graphic card), Intel (CPU), Corsair (power supply and RAM),

· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom): don't know but it appears no model number

Cheers, :)
Danny

Hi -

28 of the 29 dumps had the same bugcheck -

0x9f (0x3,,,) = A device object has been blocking an Irp for too long a time

You have an old version of ESET ESS installed along with AVG -
Code:
epfwwfp.sys Fri Nov 23 08:38:01 2012 (50AF7C39)
eamonm.sys Tue Sep 25 12:11:19 2012 (5061D7A7)
ehdrv.sys Tue Sep 25 12:12:24 2012 (5061D7E8)
EpfwLWF.sys Tue Sep 25 12:08:58 2012 (5061D71A)

http://sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=EpfwLWF.sys
http://sysnative.com/drivers/driver.php?id=epfw.sys

Remove ESET - http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146

Reboot upon completion.

If BSODs continue, run Driver Verifier -

Hi there,

I hope you guys don't mind me adding addition comment for this issue. For me, it seems the issue might be related to your Seagate Barracuda HDD working as IDE:

Code:
******************************************************************************** *

Is it possible that even you have this HDD connected on SATA, the BIOS has IDE mode set instead of AHCI/SATA?

Hi Tomas and jcgriff2,

Thanks very much for your helps. I think in my case, the problem is as Tomas said because I only install ESSET, not both ESSET + AVG on my PC. I used to install AVG and ESSET before, but never both of thsi at the same time, however the BSOD still happens. Before I posted this case to the forum, I clean re-install Windows 8 with ESSET only but the BSOD still happens.

Let me check my HDD settings in BIOS and let you guys know the outcome.

Thanks a lot!

Danny

Hi Tomas and jcgriff2,

After I change the configuration on BIOS from IDE to AHCI, Windows 8 fails to start. It hangs at "Verifying the DMI pool Data. I have to go back to BIOS and change the controller of HDD from AHCI back to IDE. Windows can start now but the BSOD happens more, about more than 10 items a day. This happens especially when I leave the computer about 3 or 4 hours, after that I com back and work with this computer. I always receive the error message "Driver_ power_state_failure"

I then format the HDD, perform the clean installation Windows 8. I don't install any anti virus software, just install Windows 8, Office 2013, Visio 2013, Google Chrome (I have both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer in my PC) and Codec for Windows Media Player but the BSOD still happens.

Please help!

Thank you
Danny

Hi Danny,

I think you rushed a bit here. I just wanted you to confirm what the setting is, not to change it just yet. If the setting is changed, for sure Windows won't be able to boot. There's a registry modification that is required before changing the setting in BIOS for Windows to boot successfully afterwards.

As I understood, you change the setting back to IDE. Could you please confirm what the current mode is, after you done clean re-installation of Windows?

In addition, you can check the following setting on your active power plan, do be sure Windows is not trying to to stop your HDD (change its power state) after some time:

Hi Tomas,
Please see below the BIOS info for HDD

Intergrated Peripherals
ICH SATA Control Mode: IDE
eSATA Controller: Enabled
eSATA Ctrl Mode: IDE
GSATA 6_7/IDE Controller: Enabled
GSATA 6-7/IDE Crtl Mode: IDE
SATA3 Firmware Selection: Onchip
GSATA RAID Configuration: Press Enter
GSATA 8_9/IDE Controller: Enabled
GSATA 8-9/IDE Crtl Mode: IDE
Is it true that if the HDDs connect to SATA cablesthen we must change to AHCI? If so, please help me to change the BIOS settings and Registry configuration.

Regarding to the power state, I change to the following:

Turn off hard disk after: never

Sleep
Sleep after: 30 mins
Allow hybird sleep: Off
Hibernate after: never

Please tell me anything wrong that I have made. Thanks mate!

Cheers,

Have you experienced any BSODs after modifying the power settings?

As for AHCI, using it for SATA drives is a good practice. Even IDE mode is supported, using AHCI gives you a slightly better performance, better power management and enables hot-swapping of the disks. Anyhow, prior Windows Vista, many home users used to use IDE simply because it made Windows installation easier (Windows Setup couldn't see some SATA drives when AHCI is enabled and required loading SATA drivers from a floppy drive). Windows Vista and newer Microsoft operating systems have quite a lot of SATA drivers built in, so usually you shouldn't face any issues when using AHCI. In case the Windows doesn't have SATA drivers for the specific controller in use, there's "Load Drivers" button during Windows setup, which enables to load drivers from USB.

You can try the following to switch from IDE to AHCI:

  1. Create a System Restore point just in case.
  2. Open RegEdit (WIN+R -> Regedit -> ENTER)
  3. On the left side of RegEdit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci
  4. On the right side, change "Error Control" data to 0 (zero)
  5. On the left, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\StartOverride
  6. On the right side, change 0 value data to 0 (zero)
  7. Reboot the computer
  8. Enter the BIOS (you need to do this on the very first reboot after doing the regisry changes. If you miss the BIOS settings, you will need to repeat registry modifications again)
  9. On Integrated Peripherals section, change IDE values to AHCI
  10. Save BIOS settings and exit.

At this point, if everything goes well, Windows should boot and install required SATA drivers. In case Windows will fail to boot, you can revert BIOS settings back and we will look into further options.

Hi Tomas,

Good news
After changing the power settings, no BSOD happens.

Bad news
After changing the Registry from IDE to AHCI and changing BIOS settings according to your instruction. Windows failed to boot. It stops at the Windows icon with the dots moving around in the black screen. I have to change BIOS settings from AHCI back to IDE. Now Windows works

So far no BSOD happens.

Hi Danny,

I really glad to hear that power settings modification solve the issue. I would suggest waiting a bit to be absolutely sure about that. In case we find out the BSOD happens again, we can proceed with further troubleshooting. If it's not, we can consider the case closed, but keep in mind you should use AHCI next time you will be reinstalling Windows.
