Recommendations:
Have you considered doing a clean install? I see a lot of old drivers left over from your system prior to the upgrade.

If you do not want to clean install, the first thing I recommend you do is update/replace/remove the following drivers:

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Thanks for the reply. A few of these are very old drivers for which I do not even use the peripherals any more (for example, Lycosa and SB Audigy). How would I go about removing these drivers since they are not listed in Device Manager as far as I can tell. I assumed that since I reformatted my hard drive before installing this morning drivers like these would have been deleted.

I want to clarify. I had just installed Vista as a clean install this morning at which point a did a full format of my hard drive. I then upgraded vista to 8.

The problem with installing Vista first is you end up with old Vista drivers on the system that then get transfered to the Windows 8 installation. It can lead to conflicts due to the old driver foundation laid out on the Vista system.

As to your question about removing drivers that may be hidden in Device Manager:

Show Hidden Devices:
Open an elevated command prompt.

  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Right click Command Prompt
  5. Click Run as administrator
  6. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  7. Type into command prompt
    Code:
    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
  8. Hit enter.
  9. Type
    Code:
    devmgmt.msc
  10. Click View (at the top)
  11. Check Show hidden devices
  12. Expand the appropriate category for your hidden device(s).
  13. Uninstall the appropriate device(s).
  14. Restart your computer.

To fully uninstall a driver, use the following steps.
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
  5. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  6. Right click the device
  7. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  8. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  9. Restart your computer.

Alternatively:
  1. Login as an adminstrative user.
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Hardware and Sound
  5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
  6. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  7. Right click the device
  8. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  9. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  10. Restart your computer.
