I enjoy streaming games and art with friends. BSOD first happened on 1/15/22, during a stream to discord call. After it restarted and I re-setup the stream it crashed again under same conditions. Before BSOD, the built in laptop keyboard stops working. The plugged in USB keyboard still works. The computer is not frozen at this point and I can attempt to shut it down normally, though it still reaches some error state before turning off when screen is black. First thing I see is a pre-boot menu asking if I want to start up normally, in safe mode, etc. The built in laptop keyboard still does not work for interacting with the menu (The USB keyboard does). If I have it start normally, it gets stuck with "Lenovo" text on the screen. The laptop will start normally if i force shutdown by holding the power button + turn it back on

I've done a lot of head scratching, searching the net for people w/ similar issue, and trying things on my own though in the end I can't figure out what's wrong + sense a greater understanding of computer memory/screen capture is needed to troubleshoot any further. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Additional Testing/Observation Notes:
  • I seem to be able to reproduce the crash when screen sharing. 5 crashes so far:
    • 1/15/22: Screenshare of application window to discord call directly, keyboard stopped working + took no action > BSOD
    • 1/15/22 (later): second crash same conditions
    • 3/10/22: Brief screenshare of USB camera to discord call using open broadcaster software(OBS) to process video. left OBS open after call ended > looked away from computer for a while > BSOD (issue not application-specific)
    • 3/11/22, ~5pm: Screenshare of USB camera to discord call using OBS (turned off hardware acceleration for discord and OBS, thinking it could be GPU settings), keyboard stopped working after 2hrs + attempted normal shutdown > computer reaches some error state still (detailed above)
    • 3/11/22, ~7pm: Screen capture of USB camera to open broadcaster software virtual camera (issue not discord-specific), keyboard stopped working + attempted normal shutdown > same results as 5pm crash. Monitoring the task manager performance tab up until keyboard stops, didn't see anything abnormal. Memory stable at about 5/7.9GB, GPU0 (intel HD graphics) around 30% use, GPU1 (NVIDIA GeForce) around 40% use

  • I have checked drivers for all items in device manager and they are up to date to recommended drivers. the laptop keyboard stopping working feels like a symptom but not the real issue here...
  • windows memory diagnostic did not find any issues when run
  • strangely there are no dump files for the two crashes on 1/15, 3/10, and the 5pm crash 3/11. Something was captured during the 3/11 7pm crash though!
  • between 1/15/22 and 3/11/22 I did not do significant screen sharing and computer has run normally

Step 5 Questions:

  • System Manufacturer? Lenovo
  • Laptop or Desktop? Laptop
  • Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) Lenovo Ideapad Y700-15ISK
  • OS ? (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista) Windows 10
  • x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit)? x64
  • What was original installed OS on system? I don't recall, sorry
  • Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? came pre-installed or came with a CD that did the installation. I don't recall precisely
  • Age of system? (hardware) I don't recall precisely, around 2016?
  • Age of OS installation? same as above, around 2016
  • Have you re-installed the OS? no
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 6700HQ @2.60GHz
  • RAM (brand, EXACT model, what slots are you using?): I have never opened this laptop, it is as it came. A review site states "DDR4-2132, PC4-17000, 1066.1 MHz, Dual-Channel, 15-15-15-3"
  • Video Card: Intel HD Graphics 530 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
  • Is driver verifier enabled or disabled? I haven't used driver verifier, it is in default state
  • What security software are you using? (Firewall, antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, and so forth) McAfee antivirus & firewall
  • Are you using proxy, vpn, ipfilters or similar software? no
  • Are you using Disk Image tools? (like daemon tools, alcohol 52% or 120%, virtual CloneDrive, roxio software) no
  • Are you currently under/overclocking? Are there overclocking software installed on your system? no and no

Thank you for the help. I've updated NVIDIA Graphics driver to GeForce Game Ready 511.79 and run a test using OBS virtual camera. Noticed laptop keyboard stopped working after ~30mins, though I was able to screencapture for 3 hours without crashing. (neat!) After stopping OBS and closing application windows in prep to see if the computer will shutdown/restart back to a normal state, it crashed. Unfortunately, I don't see a dump file for 3/12 in bluescreenview

1) The BIOS: Version/Date LENOVO CDCN27WW, 11/12/2015

Nvidia GPU driver prior to post #2: (587C0008) / NVLDDMKM.SYS (21.21.13.7667, 13.58 MB (14,240,184 bytes), 3/24/2017 3:00 AM)

Thank you for the assistance. The suggestion to update NVIDIA drivers lead me to do a deeper dive of my graphics settings. Testing various screen capture setups, I narrowed down the issue to screen capture of certain software.
Ok: USB camera, art software, web browser, windows media apps
Bad: unity game app, PS2 emulation app

Realizing graphics card settings moved from NVIDIA software to windows(Graphics Settings), specifying unity game app to use NVIDIA GPU seems to have fixed that issue. updating PS2 emulation app to latest seems to have fixed that issue as well.

Only extended streaming will tell if this is truly fixed, though we get there when we get there. I intend to hold off on updating BIOS for now, though will keep it in mind if I'm having issues again. Latest sysnative log still attached for reference.

Thank you so much for your time & support!

Test Case Notes:
  • 2hrs OBS virtual camera capture of USB camera, no issues
  • 2hrs OBS virtual camera capture of USB camera > streamed to discord, no issues
  • 3/12/22, ~7pm: OBS virtual camera capture, turned on overlay of unity game app > keyboard lost in ~30mins > BSOD
  • After changing unity game app to use NVIDIA GPU in window graphics settings, 2hr OBS virtual camera capture of USB Camera + unity game app overlay, no issues
  • 30mins each OBS virtual camera capture of art software, web browser, and windows media apps, no issues
  • 3/13/22, ~2:40pm: changed PS2 emulation app to use NVIDIA GPU in windows graphics settings. keyboard lost after ~1hr OBS virtual camera capture > BSOD
  • 2hr re-test OBS virtual camera capture of art software, web browser, windows media apps, no issues
  • 2hr OBS virtual camera capture of PS2 emulation app after updating to latest version, no issues

The debugging displayed recurrent misbehaving Nvidia GPU drivers.

With different versions causing BSOD see if you can find a friend, neighbor, relative, or local computer store to swap test the GPU card.

The swap can be Nvidia or AMD.

Best testing is to test a new card in the problematic computer and test the card from the problematic computer in another computer.

The computer has Nvidia Optimus so you can remove the card and use only the Intel iGPU to see if there is computer stability / instability.

The computer can be monitored using Reliability Monitor is the Best Windows Troubleshooting Tool You Aren’t Using

I would hold off swapping the graphics card for now and focus on confirming it is a driver issue or not.

Thank you for the input. I'm back! The unity game app that I want as an overlay in stream is not behaving. I know this /can/ work because I have multiple friends who use it. Updated the laptop BIOS to 54WW and will continue testing as I have time (its been clear so far).

Would prefer not to open up the laptop though will consider as a last-resort test.

I've completed two 4-5hr long streams with the unity game app overlay + the PS2 emulator(surprised!), and a 1hr test with a different PC game without issue. Thank you so much for the help!
