Having problems with BSOD related to network driver RTWLANU. At least that's what's listed on the BSOD. Am trying to figure out how to resolve that issue. I ran several virus scans, malwarebytes, rootkit killers, ccleaner, etc. and was able to delete a few different worms and viruses, but am left with BSOD whenever I close the lid to my laptop and reopen. This is a problematic Lenovo Yoga 13 adapter/driver. I've eliminated constant wireless disconnects and limited connections by setting a static IP and fiddling with adapter settings. Uninstalled old drivers, and installed updated driver, but BSOD continues. Uploaded the zipped file collection app, but got an error trying to run Perfmon in administrative mode, so no report.

Ran chkdsk and didn't find any problems with hard drive.

In the process of running sfc/scannow, I was able to eliminate a previously unknown corrupt driver in my registry. Ran sfc/scannow a few times and it couldn't be removed, but stumbled upon your utility online, ran it and had success. Thank you! FYI, that report is attached to try and determine if that is in anyway RTWLANU.sys BSOD's.

Do you think I'm dealing with a corrupt driver, registry, or is something else going on? Every time I make a change I think I have this resolved, but alas, the BSOD doesn't want to leave the party. Any suggestions?

On the faulting instruction regarding the Realtek RTLxxxxx Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter driver, there was a copy of the contents from rax+0BB8 to r8d and ultimately zero extending the value. The actual issue in this instruction is rax:

1. Update all of your Realtek network drivers to their latest versions.

Products - Lenovo Support (US)

You may need to try Realtek's website if not available from Lenovo - Realtek

2. If the above fails, remove and replace avast! with Windows 8's built-in Windows Defender for temporary troubleshooting purposes as it's likely causing conflicts with Malwarebytes:

avast! removal - Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

Windows Defender (how to turn on after removal)

A.Navigate to Control Panel (with icons). You can do this by hitting Start > Search > Control Panel. Once in Control Panel, change the drop-down from Category to Large and/or Small icons.

B.Among the list of icons, find and click Action Center.

C.Assuming the removal of your prior antivirus software went properly, you will notice for both Spyware and unwated software protection (important) and Virus protection (important), it'll have a button labeled Turn on now. Click this button (it doesn't matter which, as Windows Defender serves as both in Windows 8/8.1).

Patrick

Thanks Patrick, Interestingly, it looks like the BSOD's stopped after I removed the corrupt driver through using your utility (see first post) but after taking your suggestion to update network driver, I'm getting a lot of connectivity inconsistencies. Not sure of your forum's protocol, should I post those issues to the networking forum or continue here?

Good to hear regarding the BSOD's.

If you're getting network issues after updating the driver, do a rollback to the older version. If it ain't broke, don't fix it : )

Patrick

Spoke too soon in prior post. BSOd occurred again today with same error related to rtwlanu.sys. Think it has to do with updating the driver because the bsod returned and had a bunch of other issues including taking an extremely long time to boot. When Windows finally did launch nothing operated right. Programs took forever to launch, charms too. Most of the Windows apps were'e missing from the start page and I couldn't run any diagnostics. I uninstalled that driver and downloaded and installed an older version that seems to operate better. Then I ran your sfc utility which again found and removed a corrupted file, report attached. Also ran the bsod application and have attached that file. Will reboot and see if Windows loads correctly without bad wlan driver, but wondered if you could take a look at the attached files and let me know if anything other than the Rtwlanu driver caused the bsod and corrupted the registry. Thanks for your assistance.

It's the same driver again.

Also, I think you're dealing with two separate issues here -- i.e a corrupt Windows, and a driver problem. We'll of course take care of the latter first, but the former will have to be fixed by our WU experts here. In any case, please follow my recommendation regarding avast! as I can see it's still installed.

Patrick

OK, before rushing to post again I'm going to wait a bit to see if the system is stable now. After uninstalling Avast with utility and rolling back the driver to an earlier version, the system "seems" to be stable for the time being. Ran sfc/scannow and chkdsk and both came back with no errors. Confused as to why the last scan report I posted caused you to say "it's the same driver" that was causing the problem, cuz I thought I had rolled back to an earlier version by then, but who the hell knows because I've had to uninstall and install so many lousy Lenova Realtek drivers it's ridiculous! The lenovo drivers for the Yoga 13 are widely known to be problematic. Many have complained about the drivers being corrupted. There's over 1000 posts on Lenovo support threads with problems related to nearly every driver version Lenovo offers for this setup, particularly after upgrading to Windows 8.1. No one from Lenovo support responds to the threads, hence the reason I ended up here in the first place. A driver that appears to be stable can turn rogue after a few days and turn into a corruption. Never seen anything like it. Regardless, now it's a wait and see game to find out if my current driver will cooperate. The good news is that Windows is stable. The bad news is that even their best option for a wlan driver still won't take and hold setting changes that many users recommend to increase stable connections, but that's a problem I may have to take to the Networking forum. Thank you for your time.

My pleasure, let me know if the BSOD's come up again.

The bad news is that even their best option for a wlan driver still won't take and hold setting changes that many users recommend to increase stable connections, but that's a problem I may have to take to the Networking forum.

Well, the networking forum may not unfortunately even be able to help you there because it all might equate to just a really bad/buggy driver from Realtek. The usual workaround to an issue like that (since nobody wants to wait forever for a driver that may never come) is to purchase a compatible 3rd party adapter.

So of course the bsod's returned. We've both come to the same conclusion. The wifi adapter is probably bad. I've updated, and rolled back to just about every driver option only to end up with the same bsod. To make matters worse, today I got a different bsod..."system thread exception not handled". Those darned viruses did a whammy on my laptop. I've noticed that even when I try to update any driver on the laptop, I go through the process only to be told the driver is up to date, even though I know it isn't. Is it possible the viruses also damaged hardware?

I've purchased a 3rd party usb wifi adapter and I'll give that try but I may be left with other driver oriented issues. I do have some questions for you:

What does the new bsod mean, and how can I fix it? I tried to find a dump file, but the only one is dated yesterday, prior to the new bsod. I ran anti-virus software - no infections. I ran SFCFfix and no errors. SysFileCollection.zip attached. Suggestions?
After I install the new usb wireless adapter, how do I deal with the original wifi adapter/driver(s)? Is it as simple as disabling the driver in device manager?
Will Windows Update stop trying to update the original adapter driver if I have disabled it?
Finally, outside of my recent virus oriented problems, I've not been happy with the laptop performance since the Windows 8.1 update. Could I refresh my laptop back to it's original state (Win 8) and potentially get rid of a lot of problems?

FYI - forgot to mention above that you might notice I re-installed what Lenovo claims is the updated driver. Having issues with all of them so I figured I might as well run the most current one.

It may be in your best interest given the previous virus infections, driver issues, etc, to start a clean slate with this USB adapter by reinstalling Windows. Upon the reinstall, disable all other adapters other than the new one and ensure its drivers are the latest along with everything else.

Patrick
