BSOD Recurrence On Gateway Gateway NV53 -- Will Only Boot In Safe Mode

I have a chronic and so far unsolvable BSOD -- I cannot get past Safe Mode. I have received input from another Windows troubleshooting advice to no resolve; in fact I'm not sure if the advice exacerbated the problem. I ran multiple diagnostics; most recently overnight (12.5 hours) with Memtest86+ with no errors. I have ran scan disk

I do not have the Windows installation disc, if one ever existed. The laptop was purchased new in 2009 from Best Buy. I was able to create a Windows 7 Home Premium 64x dvd and usb flash iso. The recovery and restore has not helped. I downloaded the latest bios from Gateway (\BIOS_Gateway_1.05_A_A\BIOS_Gateway_1.05_Windows) and get an error when I try to execute: Driver (WDM) Init fail! (x137)

I had the first occurrence of a problem in Sep 2012. I was able to use the W7 iso dvd to actually upgrade the computer and that solved the problem until last week when the problem reoccurred. I have a Niro Blue Screen viewer file if helpful.

If you can't even get into safe mode, then you have some hardware failure, which may be the drive. I don't know unless given at least some of the BSOD output (the bugcheck code, the 4 hex parameters, and the blamed driver file). Unfortunately because this is a laptop, your options for fixing this outside of warranty repair are slim to none, and can be quite expensive.

If you wanna test your drive, use another system to burn Seatools on a disc or USB stick (it'll have to be Seatools for DOS) and then run the tests on that, except the Long test. If that doesn't show up anything, then you most likely have hardware failure involving some other internal component like the motherboard, which ain't gonna be easy nor cheap to replace.

I CAN get into Safe Mode. When I say can't get past I mean that's my limitation. Should I cut and paste my Event Viewer and/or Niro BS View text files?

Oh, well that may be better. Are you able to produce us a BSOD report as instructed in one of the stickied threads? At the very least we'll need the crashdumps (in \Windows\Minidump).

Would you like the reports as text in this message or attachments. If attachments would you like them zipped?

Here are the results from the dump files. I am also attaching a zip file of an Event Viewer since it's larger.

We'll need the actual dump files. They are very small, and you should be able to zip up and send all of them in one archive file. Btw, is it possible you can setup Driver Verifier in safe mode? Set it up, restart PC into normal Windows, let it crash a couple times, then return to Safe Mode and provide us the resulting crashdumps.

VG:

My C:\Windows\minidump directory is empty. I have attached a zip file of the mini dump files that were created by using one of the other discussion list's applet. (See attached)

Also, I ran Driver Verifier for over 36 hours previously at the advice of the same adviser from the other list, but only in Safe Mode. If I can only run in Safe Mode is Driver Verifier going to load and test the potentially problem causing drivers?

I do not have the Windows installation disc, if one ever existed. The laptop was purchased new in 2009 from Best Buy.
I was able to create a Windows 7 Home Premium 64x dvd and usb flash iso. The recovery and restore has not helped. I downloaded the latest bios from Gateway (\BIOS_Gateway_1.05_A_A\BIOS_Gateway_1.05_Windows) and get an error when I try to execute: Driver (WDM) Init fail! (x137)

How did you create the Windows 7 DVD?

What was the source of Windows 7? i.e., Did you download Windows 7 from a site?

Are the Event Viewer text files in your zip attachment from that system?

The most recent entry in the System log is June 2012 -
Code:
Event[0]:
  Log Name: System
  Source: Service Control Manager
  Date: [COLOR="#FF0000"]2012-06-14[/COLOR]T08:20:05.319

The most recent entry in the Application log - March 2011 -
Code:
Event[0]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: MsiInstaller
  Date: [COLOR="#FF0000"]2011-03-08[/COLOR]T03:00:35.000

Have you contacted Gateway about replacement Windows recovery discs?

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/showthread.php/3716-OEM-Replacement-Media

I suggest that you back up important files while you still have access in safemode.

I believe that the use of the self-created Windows 7 DVD has likely corrupted the OS beyond repair.

Regards. . .

No I have not contacted Gateway. The Windows 7 Home Premium 64x iso was downloaded and burned based upon the advice and link from one of the other troubleshooting sites. Just to clarify, the problem existed prior to downloading the W7 iso and it actually restored/reinstalled Windows to the point I could use the laptop.

So does the restore disk that you refer to that I can purchase from Gateway have the option of restoring Windows 7 to a useable state without reformatting the hard drive and losing/having to reinstall my apps?

Thanks again for your help. Please let me know as soon as you can about the last question -- I've spent far too long on this.:confused2:

No, a set of factory recovery discs will restore the system to its out-of-the-box state, so it will be basically the same as when you purchased the system.

I've looked into your .dmps a little more, and this feels like a hardware fault to me. Nothing on the memory stack indicates a 3rd party driver or software problem. That coupled with your Safe Mode issues point to hardware as Vir Gnarus said.

When everything points to Windows software or drivers as the issue, the likely problem is either hardware or a corrupted OS. If you are sure it is not the OS, it is likely hardware.

When you state 'this feels like a hardware problem' what does that mean in regards to re-installing the factory discs? If a hardware problem is causing the OS to become corrupted, what benefit is there to re-installing the OS?

I ran both the Windows Memory Test and downloaded Memtest86+ and ran for 5 passes or 12.5 hours with no errors. I also ran chkdsk /f /r and sfc /scannow with no apparent problems.

I can run in Safe Mode normally (as I am now), so I'm not sure what you mean by, "That coupled with your Safe Mode issues point to hardware as Vir Gnarus said."

Granted, I am no expert and have followed advice from advisers like you, so there may be other tests I could run to further test the hardware.

So the burning question is: "Should I spend the money to by the factory OS discs if you feel it's a hardware issue?"

Both of your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

If the problem is hardware, then no, a set of factory recovery discs probably will not help. Recovery discs would help to rule out software or a corrupted Windows installation as the problem.

That you can only get into Safe Mode indicates that either a service or driver is at fault, which the .dmps do not support, or the hardware fault is not being stressed in Safe Mode to result in crashes.

What changes did you make to the system before problems started? Any new software installed? Any new hardware in the system that was not there when you originally bought it, i.e. a RAM upgrade kit or new hard drive?

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7 may be helpful to test and make sure this is not a 3rd party software issue. You should also go through the Steps to Resolve Problems Preventing Windows Vista or Windows 7 From Booting to check for registry damage or boot configuration problems.

Can you start Windows in Diagnostic mode? In Start Menu type "msconfig" then press Enter. Select Diagnostic Startup and press OK then restart PC and see how that goes.

The thing I find unusual is that the crashdumps appear to be involved with either Kodak service or something involving networking. I'm leery of the old rusty modem drivers installed, so that should be uninstalled from Safe Mode. If you can update any drivers from Safe Mode, now's a good chance to go on Gateway website and find and update just about every driver you got installed (leave modem drivers out though).

Interesting comment regarding the 'Kodak Service'. I have run Kaspersky's TDSSKiller several times and the following always comes up:
kodak unsigned driver.png

I do have a Kodak ESP Office 6150 All In One printer. Every time I have run the TDSSKiller it comes up but I simply ignore it as an anomaly.

I'm not sure what the modem drivers would serve. I just discovered the Install/Uninstall does NOT work in Safe Mode. I really don't want to go into RegEdit as was previously attempted based upon advice from another BSOD advisory site.

Let me know your thoughts.

After I try a few more solutions I will by the GW factory discs simply to have on han should I solve the current problem.

I have not installed any hardware (memory, etc.) recently/at all. I tried once to upgrade Intuits Quickbooks prior to (not sure the proximity to the original problem; but close). I was not successful but there may be some debris left behind.

I will try the How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7 and the Steps to Resolve Problems Preventing Windows Vista or Windows 7 From Booting.

Thank you to both of you for your gracious willingness to help.

Second question that I missed: Where do I uninstall the 'crusty modem drivers'?

And I just discovered that the Uninstall feature is working. Maybe the addition on the Registry HKLM uninstall service did work. Either that or the restart of my pc this morning reinstalled the service.

I just saw that these options are available. Should I explore these options, particularly 2 or 3? Or will these simply reinstall corrupted files?

I tried several times to enter Diagnostic Startup, but the program kept defaulting to the 3rd option Set Drivers and Programs or something to that effect.
