Hello.

I'm using Windows Defender on Windows 8. When I perform quick scan the system crashes halfway through the scan. I am almost sure that it is not the hardware problem as I'm dual booting it with Windows 7 and it works completely fine. I am attaching relevant files to the post. Here are details of system:

  • OS: Windows 8
  • Architecture: 64 bit
  • Original OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
  • OEM or Retail: Retail
  • Age of hardware: 1.5 years
  • Age of install: a few days
  • CPU: i7 first generation.
  • Video Card: NVIDIA 425M
  • Manufacturer: Dell
  • Model name: Dell XPS L401x
Old discussion on this goes here: BSoD on Dell XPS L401x due to ndis.sys - Microsoft Community

Hi -

All 5 BSODs have the same bugcheck -

0xfc = attempt to execute non-executable memory

Microsoft driver ndis.sys was named the probable cause, but is more than likely a default and not the actual cause.

Process listed = MsMpEng.exe = Microsoft anti-malware engine used by Windows Defender, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE - "Windows Defender" in Windows 8)

If these BSODs are software related, Driver Verifier should help to ID the real culprit, i.e., a 3rd party driver.

Run - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...river-verifier-blue-screen-death-related.html

Let Driver Verifier run for 24 hours minimum. You can continue to use the system as D/V will run in the background. Save your work often as Driver Verifier will force a BSOD if it detects a violation.

Regards. . .
