BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f) on Dell XPS 17 9720

Long story short; I have a Dell XPS 17 9720 Laptop, just over 2 months old. I've been experiencing a range of Power related issues for most of that period, and when contacting Dell and supplying a minidump, their reply is "ntoskrnl is the issue - reinstall windows".

Other stats:
  • OS ? Windows 11
  • x64 (64bit)
  • What was original installed OS on system? Windows 11 (OEM)
  • Have you re-installed the OS? No
  • Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900HK, 2500 Mhz, 14 Core(s), 20 Logical Processor(s)
  • Video Card nVidia
  • Is driver verifier enabled or disabled? both - I've had it running for a bit over at least one BSOD (may not be in the package), it reported that dbx.sys was at fault; subsequently uninstalled DropBox but no big difference.
  • What security software are you using? (Firewall, antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, and so forth) Windows built in security
  • Are you using proxy, vpn, ipfilters or similar software? No
  • Are you using Disk Image tools? (like daemon tools, alcohol 52% or 120%, virtual CloneDrive, roxio software) No
  • Are you currently under/overclocking? Are there overclocking software installed on your system? No, although I do have the Razer Cortex software installed (but not active) and Dell insists on optimising the system.

windbg indicates it's a USBXHCI problem, and the FAILURE_BUCKET_ID is 0x9F_VRF_3_IMAGE_USBXHCI.SYS - no idea what VRF_3 is?

Beyond that, I've not much idea of where to go next.

This Stop 0x9F bugcheck is going to be a little more tricky than the others unfortunately. Let's enable Driver Verifier again but this time, you'll want to enable the following settings:
  • Deadlock Detection
  • I/O Verification
  • Force Pending I/O Requests
  • IRP Logging
  • Power Framework Delay Fuzzing
  • DDI Compliance Checking and DDI Compliance Checking (Additional)

One of your earlier dump files did indicate some problems with your graphics card driver, however, that shouldn't have any impact on your latest crashes which appear to be related to the USB stack.

I'm constantly keeping drivers up to date :)

I've rebooted after enabling verifier, will see what comes of that - another symptom I've been experiencing when my mouse (Deathadder v2 Pro) is using Bluetooth (since travelling I've had it on the usb cable only) is that the input devices would stop working in the following order, then shortly followed by a BSOD.

* Mouse
* Laptop's Touchpad
* Touch Screen
* Keyboard

Although, I do recall also that sometimes this would happen without the mouse connected, but maybe when my bluetooth headphones are connected?

Still trying to replicate that one consistently. It doesn't happen when I'm at my desk attached to the hub and all wired in.
 
The issue will definitely be something related to a USB device, do the Bluetooth headphones have their own USB dongle attached?
 
no, the only devices attached currently are the Dell Dock through which everything else is attached (two LG monitors via Thunderbolt, Blackwidow ultimate keyboard, external Samsung DVD-R, Logitech camera). The mouse was via usb via the dock as well until about half an hour ago - attempting to get bluetooth to fail.

It seems that your Nvidia audio bus driver is possibly causing some strange issues with how the power IRP is being handled, I would recommend that you find a suitable update from either the Dell support page or the Nvidia support page. Both should have their device detection tools which will automatically find the appropriate drivers for you.

righto - so I've rolled back the nvidia driver to the latest version supported by Dell (by that I mean the driver they provide on their website) even though it's not the latest version from nvidia (which was on the system before).

I'm starting to wonder whether this could be a hardware issue at all? The other difference is that when this happened, the laptop was not plugged into any devices at all (including power). the BSOD are happening at this stage when it attempts to wake itself up to check stuff so I don't actually see them - sleep states are as follows:

Yes, it will do because that's what a Stop 0x9F is caused by - drivers which aren't able to handle power transitions correctly. This isn't a hardware issue.

Is this graphics card driver the one provided by Dell or Nvidia? If it isn't the one provided by Dell, then you'll want to use DDU to remove it and then install the one provided by Dell despite being older.

@x BlueRobot the BSOD reported above (last night) was with the dell nvidia driver - I've just cleaned up with DDU and reinstalled the Dell one, and now when off power and attempting to resume I got a totally different BSOD:

New laptops should not have BSOD.

Consider contacting Dell for a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA).
 
This seems like a bug with that graphics card driver, it seems that it's unable to handle waking from either the hibernation state or the entire off state. You have two options really: either continue to test different driver versions and hope that one of them works; or, contact Dell and request a RMA and complete refund. You shouldn't have these issues with a new laptop. The issue isn't hardware related per se but it's the Dell configuration of that graphics card driver.
 
@x BlueRobot agreed. After a complete shut down and restart, I did a test and left the computer off power and let it go to sleep for 20 minutes - came up normally when I returned.

Still dubious though, and I've got an active support ticket with Dell at the moment. If it keeps happening I will be asking for an RMA.

No problem, just keep testing it as you have and keep a log of when the crashes have occurred and after when e.g. a restart of the system. You can disable Driver Verifier now if you haven't done so, probably won't be much use at the moment. I'll make sure that you don't let Dell try and blame Windows for the crashes because the issue appears to be firmly with that Nvidia graphics card / audio driver.
 
The Sysnative log collector failed to collect all event log files.

The Sysnative log collector failed to collect all event log files.

The log collector report displayed:

However none of these text files were seen in the results.

There may have been Windows Error Reporting (WER) about the computer problems.
This is a known bug with Windows 11 and the Sysnative file log collector. I did develop a newer version which rectifies this, however, it needs further testing before it's available for public release.

Then if Dell requests a clean install it can be easily performed as you've already made a backup image.
I wouldn't even allow Dell to perform a clean install, it's a complete waste of time, I'll request for a immediate refund or an escalation to higher tier support.
