(CNN) -- From the streets of California to the stores of New York City, protesters are making sure no one forgets the case of Eric Garner.

But some are doing so more violently than others.

Demonstrators flooded a highway in Oakland, California, late Sunday night, prompting a heated standoff in the freeway between protesters and the California Highway Patrol.

Some threw explosives, bottles and rocks at officers, authorities said. Highway Patrol Sgt. Diana McDermott said it wasn't clear what type of explosives were thrown, but she said some in the crowd had Molotov cocktails and M-80 firecrackers.

You've all seen the video that lead to Eric Garner's death, right?

Video - 'I can't breathe': Eric Garner put in chokehold by NYPD officer ? video | US news | The Guardian

Police used an illegal chokehold and kept it on despite Garner emphatically stating "I CAN'T BREATHE".

His crime - selling single cigarettes from a pack of cigs and not charging sales tax. :r1:

Arguably there are only so many unarmed, generally black, citizens you can kill and not be prosecuted for before people start to feel that something isn't working.

It's completely insane there was no indictment for this. Even in an age where you can have 4 different videos of police commiting a crime that cost someone their life, they still won't get indicted...

I don't have the link to hand, but a grand jury has just gone into session to decide whether or not to indict a police officer who killed a black 12 year old in what appears to be practically a drive by shooting. The kid was playing with a BB Gun - although it's hard not to imagine the main crime wasn't being black. It's not often white children are accidentally shot by police...

I've seen the video for that on the news; he didn't even question him. There been racism and homophobia in police departments for years, and yet governments do not take any action.
