Car exhaust noise is really becoming a nuisance to some (maybe many) as auto manufacturer's "beef up" the stock vehicle exhausts; some cars are factory equipped with an "exhaust loudness control" (for lack of a better term) and then there are of course after-market exhausts that can be extremely loud and seem to be the ones that attract police.

My sister and brother-in-law have very loud factory-stock cars.

His is a BMW 550i sedan "that boasts a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an awesome 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque."
(from BMW)

Hers is a BMW X5 SUV with a 4.4L BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo V8 engine: 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque

Both are so loud at full throttle that you can hear them from at least 2 miles away; probably more.

Cadillac has gotten into this as well. The Cadillac dealership gave me a brand new 2021 CTS-V as a loaner car while my XTS was in for service. The CTS-V had a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine with 640 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. It could do 0-60 in under 4 seconds. Whenever floored, the CTS-V was beyond incredibly loud and I was pulled over and ticketed on I-195 while overtaking a slower car. Cadillac dealt with the ticket. The NJ State Trooper was insistent that the exhaust had been modified (based on his "ear" and not a decibel gauge), even though there was less than 200 miles on the car; the new car window sticker was still affixed, and it had a new car dealer license plate on it.

Cops unfortunately mostly go after newly licensed kids on this issue and hit them with tickets (fines) that many cannot afford.

We're very lenient here in S.C. We have no state inspection. Cut-out exhausts are common. BTW, when I lived in your state I had a 1967 Plymouth GTX 440cid. It needed 100 Octane gas to run properly. I would retard the spark to run on 93 unleaded, but it would never pass emissions that way so when going to the inspection station, I would fill up with Sunoco 260 and advance the spark back to factory spec.

I just really, really don't get the attraction of these cars with exhaust systems tuned to make maximum possible noise.

I'm not even wild about "a good, solid growl" but can understand why some like it.

Give me the silent Q-ship any day. Losing a tiny bit of truly excess power in order to "fly below the radar" (both figuratively and, to an extent, literally) is way more than worth it.

Thinking about cutting the mufflers off the XTS?

All the Hemi V8 Challengers have Active Exhaust Valves now. Controlled by the PCM and depending what mode you have it in (Eco, Street, Sport, Drag, etc.). Any factory exhaust has been certified legal if it's been able to be sold in a state

Manual 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Won’t Be Sold in California Because It’s Too Loud

But one would have to go to some sort of inspection station to get the ticket voided and the onus would be on the owner

This was overturned:

Manual 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 Touring can now be sold in California
