Hi,

my system is the following:

i5-3MSI Z77A-G45 Motherboard
570K (not overclocked) @ 3.4GHz
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black Low Profile, PC3-12800 (1600)
128GB SanDisk Pulse, 2.5" SSD (main drive)
1TB Samsung HD103SJ (2nd drive)
Nvidia Gforce GTX 275

Running Windows 7 professional. I built this in February this year, it worked flawlessly until around 2 months ago. Since then it's regular blue screens, and flash player crashes a lot when I'm on the net. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing my GPU drivers (thought perhaps they were the cause due to the flash player crashes). I hadn't installed any new software around the time the crashes began.

The other thing is that windows update no longer updates (though MSE does). When I try manually I get the following error:

WindowsUpdate_80070002

Also if I view my update history the only ones listed are those for MSE, though there were plenty listed before this issue began.

I have tried the official Microsoft steps to resolve this error as listed at the link below, but they don't work at all, the problems remains exactly the same:

Windows Update error 80070002 - Microsoft Windows Help

Any help that can be offered would be appreciated,

thanks,

The problem relates - at least in part - to the following error....
Code:

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from Fix Windows Update corruption errors such as 0x80070002 and 0x80070057
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply

Hi,

thanks for replying!

I took several blue screens and attempts to get that installed, but I eventually managed - the file is attached,

thanks,

It looks to me like you have some registry corruption.

I need to have a
look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the
C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file
(no extension) to your desktop and
then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site
(preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

Hi,

thanks again - but when I try to copy that file, I get a system message telling me "The action can't be completed because the file is open in system". I've tried googling the issue but I can't resolve it?

thanks,

g

In that case, boot to Safe Mode and do the copy there - the system is still attempting to load it to correct the errors (and failing).

Great, that worked - here's the file.

I had to split it into two due to the attachment size restriction - I also had to rename 'COMPONENTS.z01' to 'COMPONENTS.z01.zip' because of file type restrictions. So please download both and rename 'COMPONENTS.z01.zip' to 'COMPONENTS.z01' and they'll extract,

thanks,

g

That's why I asked you to post the complete zipped file to SkyDirve - any other fileshare service will do.
There's too much chance of the split and rebuild breaking and further corrupting the already 'dodgy' data.

Surprisingly, I can see none of these errors there - which means that I'm looking in the wrong place.

It's too late tonight - bed time for me! Back tomorrow evening after work.

Hi,

thanks for having a look at that. Just to provide more information - I just tried to run sfc/scan now from an elevated command prompt, but I get this message:

'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.'

thanks,

g

Hmmm - please post the CBS.log file - it may show what caused the problem (you'll have to copy it to the desktop before compressing the copy for upload)

There appear to be a lot of registry Keys to which you are being denied access - this type of thing is often caused by serious registry corruption.
Have you attempted a System Restore back to a time when the system was happy?

Thanks for looking. Unfortunately not, regarding the restore point. Doesn't sound good - do you think it's beyond repair?

What I mean is - unfortunately I don't have a restore point from before the point the problems began. Could this be an indication that my hard drive is bad? I checked it's health with sandisk's toolkit but it didn't seem very thorough.

Almost nothing is beyond repair :)

Worse comes to worst, then a repair install should fix it - and if that fails then a clean install will fix it unless there are hardware problems.

We have a way to go before either of those is necessary, though (unless you want to take a short-cut).

Back tomorrow :)

Hi NoelDP,

thanks a lot for the help in this thread. I'd feared it might not be an easy one! I will try the repair install when I get a chance and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again - I really appreciate the time you've spent here helping me out.

cheers
