Hi,

I have an issue with BITS-client and W8.1-Update on a new laptop
msi-GT72 (bought about 3 weeks ago) with preinstalled Win8.1 x64
(with additional preinstalled software).
I cant start the BITS-Client (it doesnt start automatically) and the
W8.1-Update dont want to install the latest updates: at this time i have only
two important updates for my system (for IE).
I found a very similar case (nearly identical) here on this board:
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/15400-unable-start-bits-update-windows-8-1-a.html

I have read in this thread above that "Norton Internet Security" can damage
the W8.1-Update and the BITS-client: i also had preinstalled
"Norton Internet Security" (like in the case above). I deinstalled it (already
about 2 weeks ago) and now i´m using my own full licence of "F-secure Internet
Security". I also used the "Norton Removal Tool". The laptop is still nearly
"untouched": few small applications and i have only few games on it .

I´m from Germany and my English is not perfect. I have some screenshots/logs but
the screenshots are in german language. I hope it will not be too difficult
for you to find a solution:
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/in...man-french-polish-w8-1-solution-possible.html

Today I executed the tool "SFCFix.exe" and the tool found no errors, log is here:

I also attached screenshots and some logs from my laptop are in this post.
I will upload the CBS-logfiles later. I have read in the instructins they are not neccessary at this time.

thx a lot!

The issue can be investigated using few different methods, but whenever I have a service failing to start, I prefer to look into a PML log:

  1. Download Process Monitor tool.
  2. Extract downloaded archive to C:\ProcMon directory.
  3. Press WIN+R.
  4. Type services.msc and press ENTER.
  5. Leave Services window opened and start Process Monitor. It will begin capturing the data.
  6. While Process Monitor is still running, try starting Background Intelligent Transfer Service service.
  7. While Process Monitor is still running, try starting Windows Search service.
  8. Return to Process Monitor window and stop the capturing, either by pressing CTRL+E or clicking the magnifying glass icon in the toolbar.
  9. Click CTRL+S or select File -> Save... from the menu.
  10. Select All events under Events to save section.
  11. Select Native Process Monitor Format (PML) under Format section.
  12. Confirm the path the log will be saved and click OK.
  13. Compress the PML file.
  14. Upload the compressed file to a file sharing service (e.g. OneDrive or DropBox).
  15. Share the download link here.

Hi

thx for your informations!

7. While Process Monitor is still running, try starting Windows Search service.

"Windows Search"- service is running. I only have the option to "stop" or "restart" the service
(see left corner of the screenshot "windows_search_is_running.jpg").
Should i only try to start the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service"-service
and record only this start attempt with the "Process Monitor" ?

greets from Germany

I am sorry, you should indeed try starting "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service; it has nothing to do with "Windows Search".

Hi,

This file
"C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI\Help Desk\MSI Update Agent.exe"
has been installed together with the MSI-tool "MSI help desk", see screenshots:

"msi_help_desk_01.jpg"
"msi_help_desk_02.jpg"

I had to install the "MSI help desk": i wanted to register the new laptop
in my MSI customer account. And i also had to enter a "special" serial/hardware(?) number of the new laptop.
In order to get this number and register the laptop i had to install this tool "MSI help desk": the
link with the download was on the official MSI registration web site.

I never executed this file "MSI Update Agent.exe", i guess it ran as service or autostart-programm.....
Should i deinstall the whole "MSI help desk" ? I guess this tool is not neccessary anymore...?

"WindowsUpdate.zip" is attached to this post.

thx a lot!

I would strongly suggest removing this application using Programs and Features Control Panel applet.

OK, i just uninstalled the the MSI-tool "MSI help desk".
Should i now try to start the W8.1-update or the BITS-service?

thx!

Please reboot the computer and rename C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log to C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.bak and try starting BITS service. In case it fails, please attach the newly generated C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file.

Hi

i followed your instructions, but maybe something went wrong.
Here are my steps:

1. I rebootet the laptop
2. I renamed the file to "WindowsUpdate.log.bak"
3. tried to start the BITS-client. But it didnt start again: "BITS_failed_again.jpg"
4. I wanted to save the newly generated "WindowsUpdate.log" but i it was missing:
"new_logfile_missing.jpg"

5. i rebootet the laptop
6. shortly after the reboot there was a newly generated file "WindowsUpdate.log"
but it had the size: 0 kb
7. after some minutes (was typing this post):
the same file ("WindowsUpdate.log") has now 36,3 kb ("new_LOG_file_after_reboot.jpg")
8. this new file is attached to this post: "WindowsUpdate.zip"

Thanks.

Try this:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt by right-clicking on CMD.EXE shortcut in your start menu and selecting Run As Administrator from the context menu.
  2. Type the following command:
    Code:
    REG ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
  3. Try starting the BITS service

Hi TomasD,

I just entered this command into the cmd-window. Then i tried to start the BITS-Service.
It started immediately. I rebooted the laptop and the BITS-Service is still running:
"BITS_still_running_after_reboot.jpg".

Should i now try to install the last few W8.1-Updates? Or wait for new instructions?

thx a lot!

Perfect. You can proceed with installation of all the updates through Windows Update.

Hi TomasD,

I just ran the w8.1-update: it installed successfully 2 important updates (for IE) i selected:
"2_important_updates_success.jpg"
I didnt instal the 3rd (and last) important update in the list because its an update for my LAN-printer.
The printer is only shared in my LAN and is not yet installed on msi-GT72.
I guess its better to take my own drivers for the first installation of the LAN-printer on the msi-GT72.
I also checked if there are any new event-IDs: shortly after the successful W8.1-update and the reboot
(after the installtion of the two updates) there were no new events.

thx a lot! Great job!

Perfect. You can proceed with installation of all the updates through Windows Update.

Do you think the issue is solved and i can mark the thread as "solved"? Or should i wait for new instructions?

As the BITS service is running and you were able to install updates successfully, you can mark the thread as SOLVED.

Good luck!
