Windows Update was not working for me, so I ran Windows SURT to see what was causing the problem. It looks like avast is the culprit, but I don't know how to fix the errors in CheckSUR.log.
I have tried using the Programs and Features to "Repair" the Avast installation. I also tried updating Avast. Neither of those things helped. I managed to find the entries in regedit, but I have almost no experience with the registry, so I couldn't identify any errors.
I read another thread on Sysnative with the same issue, and would have followed the instructions, but there were strict warnings not to follow certain instructions for that user since the solution was made specifically for them.
Below is the SFCFix log. CBS folder shortly to follow.

Hello, it seems that you had the same problem than me, I found this solution that works on the forum: zcomputerwiz
SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
Save any open documents and close all open windows.
On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
SFCFix will now process the script.
Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
Once SFCFix has finished, run the System Update Readiness Tool again.
When SURT has completed, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.
Thank you for your tip, stef23. I will try it out and post back to let others know if it works. I did find that solution before, but I was a bit wary of trying it since there was a warning that the solution was only for the original poster on that thread. (Sorry for the late reply. I've been so busy that I've barely had time to even turn on my computer :)

So SURT says there's no errors, but SFCFix.exe says there are 16 SURT errors... I'm a bit lost. :noidea:
I had uninstalled Avast and manually deleted some Avast registry entries that SURT said were causing problems about a month ago. I don't know if this has anything to do with SFCFix.exe detecting an error that is not detected by SURT.
A quick bit of background. I had a program on my computer that was causing it to BSOD several times a day for about a year (maybe I'm too patient? ). I finally figured out what that program is and uninstalled it. No more BSODs now, but Windows 7 won't update. Since SURT said there were errors that had the words "avast" in them, I assumed the registry entries from Avast caused the problem. But maybe there is a deeper problem caused by all the BSODs that can only be fixed by a clean install. I am really lost here. I don't quite know what is causing Windows not to update.
Is it time for me to give up and do a fresh install of Windows 7? Or is there still hope for getting it fixed with less drastic measures?
I ran SFCFix.exe again just now and it gave me a clean bill of health. Not sure what I did wrong in the last post.

Now that all the errors are fixed, how long should I expect it to take for Windows Update to work? I clicked to check for updates, and it seems to not be doing anything...
Second, the wuauserv service (Windows Update) is still taking up 48-50% of my CPU constantly, regardless of whether I am checking for updates or not.
