Tried installing this month's security update ... KB5005076 ... and it failed the update. All other updates installed OK.

Tried downloading from Update Catalogue and manually installing, again failed.

Tried updating when booted into clean boot, again update failed.

Tried running SFC which found corruption but was unable to fix it.
Ran DISM which also failed telling me source files not found
Ran DISM using ISO file as source (ISO file used to create bootable USB) again source files not found.

Ran FixSFC .... log attached.

Can't attach CBS folder, as forum software tells me it's too large.

Hello and welcome,

Can't attach CBS folder, as forum software tells me it's too large.
Provide the file cbs.log in that folder only to start with:
  • Copy the file cbs.log to your desktop first.
  • Zip the copied file and upload the zipped file via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or WeTransfer and just provide the download link.

Removed some Flash remnants, that seemed to have been the source of some of the problem, ran SFC again, but still not fixing corruption, however the new cbs.log is much smaller than the earlier one, so I am now able to attach it.

If you need anything else, please let me know. I do have a copy of the old cbs.log if necessary, it is 263MB in size, as opposed to the current one which is 750KB.

Step 1:
Zip the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CbsPersist_20210716083225.cab and attach it to your next reply.

Step 2:
Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Filedropper or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    1p8eDnI.gif
  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the computer.
Open an elevated command prompt.
Copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

Code:
sfc /scannow
Wait for this to finish before you continue

Code:
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Zip this file and attach the zipped cbs.txt to your next post.

Thanks for your time and expertise Peter, it's much appreciated.

It's getting late here, so I'll do this first thing tomorrow morning, and post my reply then.

SFC /scannow failed to fix corruption.

No fixlog to post. Because of large number of entries to remove, after an hour running, the Fix caused computer to overheat, so I had to terminate FRST.

So what I did then was to sub-divide the fix, and run each separately. Overall time taken to complete was about 3.5 hours.

Once finished, rebooted computer, and then ran a Registry Search as in post #17 above. Results attached below.

As FRST did not find any entries for KB5004298 or KB5005076 I then tried to install update KB5005076, which failed in the same way I described in post #14 above.

Latest cbs.log file attached below ....
