We're trying desperately to decommission this server, but it will not remove it's roles. CBS, DISM, ProcessMon and SFCFix available here.

CBS.zip (82.58MB) - SendSpace.com

Your help is appreciated. We have migrated DHCP and AD roles so I'm a little less concerned and will proceed with forcibly removing it as a domain controller and AD CS server. But I would like to be graceful if I can. I also know that this server will start turning off if I don't keep rebooting it now that it's no longer schema and RID master (darned "essentials" edition).

Are you still needing help with this or did you resolve it another way?

Sorry for the delay, I had a very busy weekend!

The problem seems to be related to corruption of the Component hive in the registry.

I have prepared a replacement Components Hive for you based on the one you uploaded. If you have made significant changes since then I should probably do this on a newer version.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config
See if this helps.

There are still illegal characters being picked up for this key:

This is in a part of the registry that I didn't look at. Please share the Components Based Servicing Hive by following the instructions below. Note that I want you to save the export as a Registry Hive file type not the .reg file type.

Export CBS hive
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (.).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload to Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and just provide the link here.
