AMD Radeon Graphics application install: install package failure

So lately my amd drivers disappears by itself for no reason. When I try to reinstall it, it says application install: install package failure, but it still continues with the install. The graphic would be fine for a day or so and then all of a sudden it would start uninstalling itself again.

I have an Asus R510D laptop
AMD A10-5750M APU 2.5 GHz 8GB memory
GPU: Radeon HD 8650G+ 8670M 2 GB.
Windows 10

What is telling you they "uninstall"? Drivers don't just uninstall. They can become disabled, but to uninstall (which involves deleting files) could suggest some malicious activity.

Have you scanned for malware? With what?

Any errors in Device Manager?

I have scanned with malwarebytes. In device manage, it says the 8600M driver is working properly, but the 8650g driver is not installed.

It actually says, "8650g driver is not installed"? Or you just don't see it.

I am thinking that the 8650g is part of the 8600M series. If so, that would be fine.

Do the images displayed on your monitor appear right?

What does Speccy say?

Yes, it actually says that 8650g is not installed. The images are fine. In Speccy, in summary under graphics it says:

Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@64Hz)
ATI AMD Radeon HD 8650G (ASUStek Computer Inc)

ATI AMD Radeon HD 8600M Series (ASUStek Computer Inc)

CrossFire Disabled

Here's what it looks like in the graphics tab.

Don't worry about the Generic PnP Monitor. That just means you have not installed the .ini file for the monitor and that is no big deal. There really is no such thing as drivers for monitors because operating systems don't communicate with monitors. They communicate with the graphics cards, which then communicate with the monitors. All the .ini file does is supply the monitor brand name and model number, and gray-out unsupported resolutions.

Your card is properly identified by Speccy so that is good. And the 8600M Series is right too so not sure I would mess with it since the monitor is displaying the images fine. If it bothers you, you can totally uninstall the drivers, then reboot and try loading them again.

Thanks so far, my only problem at the moment though is that games have terribly low frame rates now. It's really weird, because when I go into Amd radeon settings it says "No AMD graphics drivers is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware." This is strange because other things like Speccy say they are installed.

Then it sounds like something is corrupted and I would totally uninstall the drivers, do a "cold" restart, and install again. By cold, I me to shutdown and unplug the computer from the wall for 15 seconds or so, then start it up again.

That's a last resort option that often does no good - especially with hardware problems as you still have the same hardware and drivers when done. Also, you lose all your other installed programs, you have to restore all your personal data files, and even if it does fix the problem, nothing is learned to prevent recurrence.

I would try running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt and see if that helps. If sfc finds problems it cannot fix, see this.

Hi, I tried sfc/scannow as admin and it says everything is fine...Would you like a log or screen shot of it or something? I can send one later today when I get home.

First, make sure you had a space after sfc, as seen in my last post.

If you did have the space when you ran it, and sfc either found nothing, or couldn't fix something it found, then you need to follow the link I provided above.

After following the link provided, BrianDrab over at the windowsupdate thread says there are no Windows Servicing issues.

What I have had to do several times over the years is totally swap out graphics solutions to an entirely different GPU brand. That is, AMD is installed and giving problems, uninstall the AMD completely, including the drivers, then install a NVIDIA card and drivers. This forces a total reset of every graphics setting in the OS. Likewise, if NVIDIA is giving the problems, totally remove and install an AMD - or vice versa.

Just make sure you do a total "cold" shutdown, and observe ESD precautions before pulling/inserting cards. That is, unplug the computer from the wall and touch bare metal of the case interior before reaching in to touch any hardware.

Is this the only way? Because I'm not sure if I am to do this with my laptop. I have very little experience in replacing computer much less laptop hardware.

:embarrasment5: Sorry! Cranial flatulence!

I forgot this was a notebook. It is likely this notebook uses integrated graphics and you cannot swap it out even if you wanted to, and have the skills.

Back to your games. Are the frame rates slower than they used to be with the same games? Note that, in spite of what notebook marketing claims, notebooks just don't make good game systems because the restrictive size of the case does not support the needed cooling. They can pack the power inside the notebook case, but not the cooling. Considering even a full tower case is challenged to provide adequate cooling, it is no wonder a notebook case can not.

At this point, I can only suggest you ensure you only load the minimum number of applications at boot (without compromising your security). Make sure all vents are clear and the interior (as much as possible) is free of heat trapping dust. Keep watch for updated graphics drivers.

The frame rates are abysmal. On something I would normally get 50-60 on, I get like <10. I ran dxdiag and it showed that I was only using the Microsoft Basic Display Driver... Heres a screen of it.

I think the problem is that AMD no longer supports the 8650G drivers. I think the 8670M runs on its own driver and the 8650G runs on the legacy driver. I tried installing the legacy drivers from AMD and although it said still said "application install: install package failure" it continued and finished installing. My frame rates seem to have been fine for the past couple days. The only weird part now is that Speccy shows that I have the the 8650G installed + R5 M320 Dual Graphics instead of 8670M lol.
