I have nothing against Amazon. This story does not unfortunately contain anything that has not happened before. Instead of Amazon, it very well could have been a delivery driver from FedEx, UPS, USPS, DHL, etc...
I don't know what the answer to these repeated dog attacks on delivery drivers is, but something has to be done. CCW permit + hardware?
I am posting this as one of my nephews works 1 or 2 days a week as a delivery driver while away at college and he has told me about some of his encounters with dogs. He carries a huge can of bear repellant.
Amazon worker found dead in yard after suspected mauling by 2 dogs
If you ever encounter a delivery truck or van [especially] on local surface streets, please do all that you can to assist them/cut them a break whether the delivery driver is driving at the time or is on foot outside the truck/van - and is now trying to cross a very busy road (apparently, many 3rd party delivery companies bid for these contracts and do not really have the employees safety in mind -- only their $$ profit) because the cheap GPS the owner bought told the driver "you have reached your destination" -- when he really is ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE TRUE DESTINATION and sometimes that road to be crossed turns out to be a very dangerous 4-lane, 50+ mph high capacity, high speed, 4-lane, divided highway, usually with center-line solid-concrete "Jersey Walls" (~3-4' high x 2' wide at base) that drivers jump over [and not all make it ] - like this wall -
Imagine having to run across those 4 lanes and hop that 'Jersey Wall' in the center -- all while carrying package(s) and cars/trucks going >50 mph.
I don't envy these hardworking delivery drivers at all. Especially the Amazon driver in this story -- killed by dogs while trying to leave a few boxes for the homeowner.
So next time you have the opportunity to allow one to make a turn first, please do!
Again, I ask on behalf of my ~20 year-old nephew who does this same type of delivery work. He does not have to work as his college tuition, room, board, books, etc... are all paid for through his undergrad graduation -- as well as all costs for the Master's Degree he wants to get as well. He simply feels he should be working - i.e., being "responsible". Most kids, especially those in college, don't seem to work at all.
I started working the week after I turned 9 years old -- for my father at one of our Carvel Ice Cream stores (family side businesses). I loved the work, learned how to make every flavor of ice cream, and even got very good at making and decorating ice cream cakes. Most Saturday nights, me, my dad, sisters, mom, and brother would cater a party or 2 as one store was <2 miles from a large US Army base. Years later, I tried what many of the soldiers absolutely loved at the catered events -- an ice cream float made with vanilla/chocolate ice cream and beer. That was awful.
Carvel brand ice cream is very, very rich -- contains 10%-13% butterfat. Just eating too much ice cream will make you very sick (bad stomach ache). Yet most soldiers drank at least 2 six packs of beer on top of eating at least a quart (32 ounces) of ice cream. Some ate 1/2 gallon (64 ounces) of ice cream + the beer.
Thanks,
John
