Hi all,

I have just recently been able to update from windows 8 to 8.1 thanks to Sysnative, but since the update I can no longer obtain any sound when I connect my laptop to my tv through HDMI, it doesn't appear in the playback options so I cannot select and switch default to hdmi audio output. This appears to be a common problem with the Windows 8.1 Update and I have not since found a solution. I have a HP Envy 15.

Steps tried so far with no result:
Tick/Untick Show Disconnected/Disabled Devices in playback window ( No result)
Uninstalling and reinstalling IDT High Definition Audio CODEC since it is the original driver through HP recovery Manager ( No result)
Tried Disabling NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible)(WDM) in case of interference with driver ( No result)
Update of both NVIDIA and IDT driver ( Both are up to date and do not require further updates)
Tried using different HDMI cables OR cables working prior to update ( No result)

Steps avoided:
Restarting the computer with the HDMI cable plugged in so it appears in playback list.
Haven't tried this because I would rather avoid having to do that every time I want to connect to the TV and it is not really a solution.

I am hoping you can help, hope this is the right place for this post.

Thanks,

I have an HP ENVY TS 17 with W8.1 + IDT and don't encounter this problem.

I assume you've tried another cable?

Uninstall all audio drivers (with the HDMI monitor plugged in); re-boot. Windows will reinstall them.

I have had a few instances where the system resumed from sleep or hibernation & either had no sound or the sound was playing through the laptop and not the external TV.

A reboot always solved it for me.

Hi Jcgriff2,

I have tried different cables, and reinstalled the the IDT driver twice with no results, in the post above I have included a list of the steps that I have tried already. I was hoping maybe someone had encountered the problem and knew where it came from.. seems to me a lot of people out there are facing an audio problem post windows update and they are all a little bit lost as to what to do

Thanks,

I guess you have an NVIDIA card then.

Try this. Open NVIDIA control panel and click Set Up Digital Audio on the left hand side. Does the TV appear in the drop down list? This is what I see when I connect my laptop up via HDMI to my monitor with speakers:

Hi Tekno Venus,

I only have a limited options listing for my NVIDIA card (for video only). However, I have managed to solve the problem by going to the hp website running a check on laptop model from them and re downloading and reinstalling the IDT High definition Audio driver for the model obtained and it worked!! Thanks for your help, hope this helps other people!
