Hi there,
I'm running Windows 7 64bit and wanted to activate a Windows feature but the catalog keeps empty.
After a quick search i read about the System Update Readiness Tool and run it. (CheckSUR.txt is attached)

The culprit seems to be the KB3123862. The beloved update to annoy us with Windows 10. KB3123862 was downloaded on 22.01.2016, so there's no way in loading an old restoration point ;)
Note: Windows Update is functioning perfectly and every update possible to this day is installed! Just the mentioned catalog stays empty.
I found a thread here and read through it ([Win7SP1Pro x64] Missing Packages Related to KB3123862 & KB3035583)

I started the Activate/Deactivate Windows features to load the hive and started FRST64 afterwards and searched for KB3123862. The generated file SearchReg.txt is attached :)
Downloaded SFCFix as well but of course now I need the fitting script for it ;)

Hope you can help me and I've provided you with quiet useful informations now and done the right steps until now.

Best regards
Markus

Hello and welcome!

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Hi there,
thank you for the fast reply :)
FRST64 deleted the registry keys successfully :) (the log is attached)
The activate/deactivate features catalog is showing again *yay*
But to be sure I ran the Update Readiness Tool again and now it shows other errors (CSI C Mark Deployment Not Marked)
I attached the new CheckSUR.txt as well.

I wish you a happy new year
Markus

I think we can ignore these in this particular case because they are a part of that very remnants we removed, but please do the following so I can double-check:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Hi there,
sorry for the late reply. Only once a week I'm at home and don't have access to this computer on the other days.
After a few reboots on which the COMPONENTS-File was locked every time I started with a Knoppix-DVD and copied the whole folder ;)
I packed the zip-file you wanted. I found some BLF and Regtrans-ms files for the COMPONENTS file as well. I just zipped them too just in case.
Here is the link: Dropbox - COMPONENTS.zip

Thanks again for helping me :)

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB3126587-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB3126587-x64.cab\Windows6.1-KB3126587-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

It ran through successfully! :)
CBS.log is locked. I'll get it via Knoppix and will attach it in a few moments.

Step#1 - Export registry as hive

  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.
