I'm relieved to have found your Web site! Terrific. I hope that you can help me although I'm suspicious that I'm hooped...

Windows 8 Pro. Microsoft digital upgrade from OEM Win 7.
Acer desktop with AMD 64-bit CPU.
No viruses reported by Windows Defender full scan (manually updated to the latest definitions).
System is stable. It doesn't crash nor hang. Except...
Issues experienced are that Windows Update hangs, not offering list of updates to select (simply keeps "checking for updates"), and that Microsoft Store fails to perform an 8.1 update.
Microsoft Store tile is offering to upgrade to Win 8.1. When click on that tile, the Store displays a big magenta square "Update to Windows 8.1 for free". When click that, offered a button to start the download of Win 8.1 Pro. Click that and, moments later, I'm told that "something happened and the install of Win 8.1 can't be completed".

This is what I've done in an attempt to fix...

****** troubleshooting control panel "fix problems with windows update"
******
ran as administrator, advanced option
system reported starting and stopping services, fixing a potential Windows Update database error 0x80070490, fixing "Windows Update components must be repaired"
but Windows Update and Microsoft Store failures unchanged

****** sfc /scannow
******
reports that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
CBS log snippet:

Following this, repeated runs of sfc or the three DISM executions as listed above produce the same results as before. Windows Update still hangs. Microsoft Store still fails on Win 8.1 Pro update.

Thank you *huge* for any assistance.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Well... perhaps I was wrong about the "suspicious that I'm hooped" comment!

sfc /scannow came back with...
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
...which is the first time that it's using the word "successfully"

Anxious for you to tell me that I can try a Windows Update or Microsoft Store 8.1 update... but will wait since I don't wish to mess up this progress!!!

CBS attached. Thank you for this attention.

At what point would it be reasonable to assume that it's hung (Windows Update hanging in simply checking for updates, not yet offering to apply any)? I guess leaving it running overnight would be the least I could do? (It's 3:30pm here.)

I've seen it run for well over 24 hours before. If it's still checking for updates right now then go ahead and stop it and attempt the Windows 8.1 update again from the store.

I stopped Windows Update with the Troubleshooting control panel "fix problems with windows update". Results are the same as indicated at the top of this thread...
system reported starting and stopping services, fixing a potential Windows Update database error 0x80070490, fixing "Windows Update components must be repaired"
Microsoft Store also fails in the same manner as before.

I'm convinced that things do get fixed (case in point my message #5 in this thread) but whatever's the culprit... hasn't been, just yet. Well, at least I don't think so...

I've restarted Windows update... just in case.

Do me a favor and Check for Windows updates and let it run for at least 24 hours. Let me know if it comes back and shows any KBs that need installed.

Well... now past 24 hours and Windows Update is still chugging away (that green line keeps emerging from the left and disappearing to the right). I'm thinking that I'll leave it running until you instruct otherwise.

OK, let's do the following so I can gather more info.

Change the Windows Update setting to "Never check for Updates" and stop the Service called "Wuauserv".

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop. You can use the one you already have downloaded.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

A little hiccup when stopping Windows Update:

[first, I configured Windows Update to never check for updates]

**** I entered the command just below and then watched the Windows Update control panel indicate, after a bit of a delay, that it will never check... but then the command window displayed an issue...
C:\WINDOWS\system32>net stop Wuauserv
The Windows Update service is stopping................
The Windows Update service could not be stopped.

**** I think that net stop has a preset wait period for the service to stop and that Windows Update didn't quite stop fast enough because I re-entered the net stop command and...
C:\WINDOWS\system32>net stop Wuauserv
The Windows Update service is stopping..
The Windows Update service was stopped successfully.

Farbar ran exactly as the documentation indicated, producing a "Fix completed." dialog.

In line 3 of message #18 just above, I should have typed "that it had indeed stopped" rather than "that it will never check". Oops. By the time I realized that mistake, it seems that my editing window had closed!
