I just noticed that several attempts have been made to automatically download and install Microsoft fix: KB4054519. I executed the SFC at the administrator's level and found several errors. I would like some assistance if possible in repairing these. I have noticed other symptoms, i.e., disk drive reaching 100% even though I have added an internal hard drive of 4TB (extra). Also it is very slow to open Adobe Bridge and Photoshop even though I added additional RAM.

After running the SFC, I am making another attempt to install the fix. It has not generated an error at this time, but typically errors out right away.

I appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

Regards,

Carolyn Miller

Re: Windows Update Problem - Can't Download KB4054519

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service and just provide the link.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link.

Re: Windows Update Problem - Can't Download KB4054519

The System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) is for Windows 7. I am currently running Windows 8.1 and the tool failed to execute. I executed the DISM tool which I thought substituted for the "external" SUR tool that existed in prior Windows OS. I did not receive any errors during the DISM execution.

Right. Sorry about that. May I see the CBS.log now and please upload the hive for me as requested.

Re: Windows Update Problem - Can't Download KB4054519

The CBS.log was uploaded via DropBox in a prior message. I will have to signoff and see if I can get the Hive file since it is 'in use". Also getting an error regarding the "group or resource is not in the correct state....."

I am aware of that, but I need it now after DISM has been run again.

Reboot and try copying the COMPONENTS hive again.

I am confused as I have only executed DISM once. The CBS file I posted is the only one that was created.

I just rebooted and am not able to copy COMPONENTS. Still indicates it is "being used".

When I click on the Windows instructions for executing the DISM, I get this message. Windows Updater successfully installed other files on 12/30, but the Security Roll-up file has not been installed for weeks. Same file keeps failing. Am I to assume that Update is working as I do not have a "repair source", etc. to use as referenced below.

[h=3]For Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012[/h]To resolve this problem, use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.
  • Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  • Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
Note Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference Repair a Windows Image.
  • Type the following command and press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.sfc /scannow
  • Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.

Correction: the message referenced above starts with the paragraph: "For Windows 10, Windows 8.1............" The next sentence indicating that Windows Update is working for other updates is a separate thought. Sorry if I created any confusion.

Why am I rerunning processes that I did yesterday? I followed the steps outlined on this forum, but having to redo what I have already done. Just trying to get clarification. I executed sfc/ scannow yesterday and it took forever.

Because some processes outlined here say that they have found corrupt items and repaired them, so we have to see whether they have indeed been repaired, and if not, we have to check which have not been repaired so we can repair them manually. This is not a quick process and it may take a couple of repetitions.
