I've been fighting with a machine for several days now. It keeps trying to update from 8.1 to Windows 10 (which I want it to do), however every time says that it could not complete the update and rolls back to 8.1.
I've run sfc /scannow multiple times including in safe mode and I've even gotten to it say it repaired the errors, however it still will not update to Windows 10, nor will it install Windows Updates giving the error: 800703F1.
It will also not install drivers for the iphone and rarely recognizes USB devices without going through the Device manager and manually updating the drivers.
The error I'm getting with the manual update of the iphone drivers is: the configuration registry database is corrupt.
Any help would be greatly appreciated by the wall that I've been banging my head against.

Hello!

Please export your CBS folder and search for setuperr.log. There will likely be several available. Please zip them all up and attach them.

800703F1 means there is a problem with one of your system hives.

Okay.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Upload Drivers Hive

  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  2. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select copy
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  3. Right-click on your Desktop and select paste
  4. Right-click on the DRIVERS file on your Desktop and select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder
  5. Upload the zip from your Desktop to a file sharing service such as Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and include the link with your reply.

I've confirmed that the hive is corrupt. I will provide a replacement on Monday. If you have access to another Win8.1 system you can try and replace it yourself.

Step 1 - Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Thanks. Most updates are now processing. Still failing when trying to update to Windows 10, but I'll take it at this point.

We can troubleshoot that as well :-)

Please attach setuperr.log. Search for it using Windows Explorer as it will likely be present at various locations on the system.

Please do the following:

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
  2. Accept the License Agreement
  3. Download the ISO file to your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ISO and then run the setup to try and upgrade your machine.
