Hi,
I've been trying to apply the December 2017 security rollup several days w/o success.
(Toshiba Satellite i7 laptop, 64-bit OS)

The error code returned by Windows Update is:
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800F0900

sfc /scannow finds corrupt files but cannot fix. Looking in the CBS log the only thing of relevance I could see (bearing in mind I am not a PC expert so what do I know of relevance anyway!) was autochk.exe. This stood out because for many months I've not been able to get this to run on boot up despite warnings of corrupt files on my PC.

I replaced the autochk.exe files in \system32 and \SysWOW64 folders with copies of a different (working) PC.

That worked and finally autochk ran and seems to have 'fixed' several issues with my PC. Nevertheless, I am still unable to apply this security update.

Whilst going in round in circles following the 'help' I have updated the sound drivers - no change. I have removed and then re-installed the sound drivers - no change.
I have downloaded and run the WindowsUpdate tool - no change. I have tried manual install of the update - no change.

Having finally landed on your helpful site, I've run SFCFix and it found 3 corrupt files, one of them being autochk.exe! It 'fixed' that. But that leaves 2 unspecified files not fixed.. the output text file is as follows:

---------------------------------------

I have BitDefender Total Security 2018 installed on my laptop, which I disabled during the Windows Update and whilst running sfc and SFCFix.

If you can help further it would be great.

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hi, thank you for the logs. Could you try SFC once more? When complete, attach CBS.txt

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

Hi softwaremaniac,

I have run sfc again. Before doing so, I re-booted the computer.

Seems like same result: '
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.'

This time the cbs.log is 178MB (compared with 681kb last time..?).
I've zipped it up and put in DropBox from where you can download it.

BR,
Kim.

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload toa file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

  • Download FRST64 and save it to the Desktop.
  • Open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • Type or copy/paste the following command:

Code:
 dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"
  • Wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully" If it does not, please continue with the steps.
  • Close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the tool opens for the first time, you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST_SearchRegistry.png
  • On the Search box (1) type or copy and paste the following text:
    KB2952664
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply and try updates.
6. If updates fail, attach CBS.log

Hi softwaremaniac,

OK, so I ran the FRST64 tool,it completed without asking for a re-start.

After it finished I started windows update from the Control Panel and checked for new updates. It returned with just the one (as usual):

I started the install, it Failed after a few moments with error code 800F0900.

Fixlog attached.
CBS.log uploaded to DropBox.

Hi softwaremaniac,

That didn't work out..

1. Issued command, wusa /uninstall /KB:4022719 at Command Prompt as Admin.
Result: Installer encountered an error: 0x800f0900.

2. Searched registry using FRST with search term: KB:4022719
Result: After some minutes BSOD. 'PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA'
The PC re-started normally.

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

While I research this, please attempt another FRST registry search but enter KB4022719 (No double dot, that's very important)

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

Hi softwaremaniac,

I tried FRST registry search again with the exact term KB4022719 - BSOD again.

(I think I used the correct term before, but I copied the wrong version (with double dot) in my response, sorry.)

The BSOD occurs between 6-7 minutes into the search.

BR,
Kim.

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

What do you mean 6-7 minutes into the search? A search should not take that long. To ensure you are doing everything correctly, I'll provide the exact instructions.
I have never had this happen before, and I've worked with more than 100 OPs.

    KB4022719
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

Re: Win 7 Ultimate SP1 Update fails - for x64-based Systems (KB4054518)

Hi softwaremaniac,

I hear what you're saying - I'm trying to be precise.
Previously (the last 3x that gave me the BSOD) I didn't run the command:
dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"
prior to running FRST64.
For info I did run it first time around as instructed.

This time, I ran that command, no output.
Then I ran FRST64 searching for KB4022719.
This time it completed OK, no BSOD.
For info, time taken for the search 11min 33sec.

Result file SearchReg attached.

Thanks for your patience,
Kim.
