Hello everyone, here I am once again with a case that's driving me nuts:
This laptop randomly BSODs, not always pointing to the same driver... That made me think of a RAM failure, but Memtest86+ ran clean for more than 10 passes (18 hours+).
GsmartControl tells me hdd is OK.
Ran SFC, chkdsk, malwarebytes, Avast, etc.... System is certified clean.
Installed all Windows updates.
Updated every driver I could (GPU, WiFi, NIC, AHCI controller, etc).
But the problem persists...
Can some goodwilling person help me?

Specs:
Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop
Pentium DualCore T4300
2Gb RAM
Win7 Home Basic x86 SP1 OEM

Hi. . .

You are running Windows 7, an unsupported OS from Microsoft.

Update this Intel driver - yours is dated 2005 - Driver Reference Table (DRT) | iirsp.sys

Run memtest, one stick at a time and alternate the slots - Test RAM with PassMark MemTest86

What is plugged into your USB ports?

Regards. . .

Thanks! will try and post back the results. You won't be hearing from me for about 10 days, I'm getting on a trip tonight.

[EDIT] Oh, I forgot to mention: There's only 1 memory stick installed

Yes, Snappy Driver is a trusted application. Maybe some false alarm, but to be sure you can use the VirtusTotal website and see if the file is clean:
VirusTotal

...
Run memtest, one stick at a time and alternate the slots - Test RAM with PassMark MemTest86
What is plugged into your USB ports?
...

Ran PassMark's Memtest86 twice: one per RAM slot... not a single error found.
Nothing is connected to USB ports, but an SD card is always inserted... perhaps the card reader uses the USB interface?

Ran Avast! Driver updater followed by Snappy Driver, the former updated some drivers and the latter updated some others.
Manually tried updating Broadcom's NIC driver but even though it says 32bits I get a rejection upon install, requiring x64...

The BSOD does not show up on every boot... when it does it appears while Windows is loading the desktop or within the next minute or two.
I set a batch file to run on startup with shutdown -r -t 180 for the laptop to reboot after 3 minutes... over and over again.... After 18 hours of not BSOD'ing I assumed it was fixed.... I was wrong. Next day at second reboot it crashed....
I'll try to get another RAM stick for testing... It wouldn't be the first time Memtest does not show errors but replacing memory fixes the problem.

Do the dumps point into some specific driver?

I'm attaching new Collection Files after the updates, just in case.

Greetings,
Pablo

I don't see new crash dumps. Do you still have blue screens?

I don't see new crash dumps. Do you still have blue screens?

Not since the driver update, collected files again in case you wanted to check driver versions.
I'm, currently running the test I mentioned (script to reboot after 3 mins) and so far no errors.
I already had it running like this for about 18hs previously, before I created this thread.... I'm scared it doesn't fail now but fails in a couple weeks, like it did before.

That's why I asked if dumps point to some specific driver o seem to be random

They pointed to various drivers, but were outdated enough to update them

It failed. Today after almost 5 days being off, I powered it to continue the endless reboot test and on the 2nd or 3rd boot a BSOD came up.
It blames iaStorA.sys (Intel's storage driver right?) and the error code is 0xD1....
What's the next step?

The latest version only supports Windows 10. The last version Intel's support page offers for Windows 7 is 13.6.0.1002, which first rejected installation due to NET Framework version check error (.NET v4.8 was installed, v4.5 required). I Uninstalled .NET 4.8, installed 4.5, and now installation is rejected due to "platform not compatible" error... Intel's setup log shows the following:

... 2020:02:20 19:19:14:774: OS check passed 2020:02:20 19:19:14:775: .NET version check passed ... 2020:02:20 19:19:14:997: E Win32 exception occurred!! 2020:02:20 19:19:14:997: Error code: 0x4E24 (20004) 2020:02:20 19:19:14:998: Error text: '' 2020:02:20 19:19:14:998: Extended error text: 'Error in device matching' 2020:02:20 19:19:14:999: Debug info: 'Setup.cpp (230)' ...

What do you suggest? In the meantime I'll search online for another install package compatible with this system.

I concluded there's no update for this driver.

-Official product download page has no Intel RST driver at all (HP Support)
-Intel's Official page for the chipset only has Graphics drivers (Intel Support)
-Searching "RST" on Intel's support page shows many versions of the driver, tried the latest and the latest with Win7 support, both refused to install.
-Station-Driver's database shows that the latest available driver for Intel ICH9 is v11.7.4.1001, which is currently installed. All newer versions are not compatible with this chipset (and that's why they refused to install in the previous step).

Awaiting comments.

You are using an old and unsupported windows version.
And KMSPICO.

KMSPICO? The computer is running legal Windows... That should not be installed... I will check it.
I'm aware it's an old unsupported Windows version... that's the kind of answer I would expect from Microsoft Support... That's why I come to you: goodwilling fellows using their spare time helping others. I'm helping the owner of this computer so she doesn't have to buy a new one... Which would mean profit for me... but consumerism and discarding functioning equipment is not what I'm fond of.

Hi Pablo,

Please download https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012 (direct download), run the tool, click Continue and then click Copy which will copy the report.
Paste the report in your post please which will allow us to look into the KMSpico matter.

By the way, the computer crashed two more times, all minidumps attached (new and old ones).

Another weird piece to add to this puzzle: on boot, the process AvastUI.exe is loaded as it was some kind of 16bit application... with a window that looks like command prompt and the 16bit icon that makes me rememeber Windows 3.11 times.... Makes me think of file corruption... but I thoroughly checked HDD... chkdsk and sfc reported no errors... GsmartControl shows no warnings on the disk...

Windows isn't activated via KMSpico, I don't think Office is either.

What I suggest doing
- Install update KB971033, if KB971033 isn't listed in Windows Update download it from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...he-update-for-windows-activation-technologies
- Run Windows Update

I'm not an expert in interpreting this kind of logs, but from what I can tell Windows is licensed genuinely but not activated. KB971033 should take care of that. A non-activated Windows usually means many updates aren't available, so after installing KB971033 run Windows Update.

Please also remove KMSpico.
