Hi,

My oldish AMD pc was left unbootable after the KB4056894 update. I dual boot with XP, which deleted the restore points, but I was able to use dism to boot again.
The problem is that on shutdown and reboot Win7 says 'configuring windows udates 15% complete' and on reboot 'applying update operation...' This operation then fails.

I've used dism 'remove-package' and 'cleanup-image' with no success.

Any ideas? I've followed your instructions and run sfc, which finds no problems. CBS is attached.

Many thanks.View attachment CBS.zip

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named SleepyDude. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. For now change the Windows Update configuration to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

Lets do some fixing first...

SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCFIX.ZIP, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    sfpcJCen14An3ndjNGCI7mByhjHJud.png
    SFCFIX.zip
  • Drag the file SFCFIX.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

Hi SD, and thanks for your help. Both of those done. The SFCfix found 'no corruptions were detected'. 'Directive completed successfully.'

Thanks,

Hi,

Based on the log you provide it seems you didn't follow my instructions carefully because SFCFix didn't execute my script!

Please repeat the steps from post #4 above.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Hi,

Thanks that what I was expecting...

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
  • Download the System Update Readiness Tool (x86) and save it to some place, its a big download and eventually we need to run it several times, please keep the file
  • Run the tool. Its like an Update but it can take a long time to do the work. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running
  • Please attach to your post the log from the following location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    Note:
If the file is too big please Zip it and upload the ZIP file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

I did this already a few days ago according to this site's posting instructions. Any harm running it again or is that necessary?

Thanks

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Yes I know. There is no problem in running the tool several times. Because we fixed some files reported by the tool the last time you run it we whant to check if the errors are gone and no more problems are found before proceeding.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Hi,

Log looks good those avast references can be safely ignored.

Try to install the following windows Updates in the order presented:
- KB4056894
- KB4073578

Note: If after installing the first update it asks for a reboot deny it and try to install the KB4073578 update

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

- KB4056894 installation gives the error 'this update is not applicable to your computer' and terminates on 'ok'.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Ok, can you try the other one and post the result.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Same result: gives the error 'this update is not applicable to your computer'.

Thanks

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Ok, thanks.

Set the Windows update to Auto and search for updates. Any new updates offered?

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

"An error occurred while checking..." Error 8000FFFF Unknown error

Update was working ok until running SFCFIX etc. It found no important updates other than the usual Defender definitions. Optinal updates were mixed drivers.

Thanks

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Thanks for the update. Please repeat the steps to upload the current CBS folder.

Re: [Win 7 32 sp1, AMD] Windows update refusing to clear

Hi,

Try to uninstall the update KB4054518 then restart the computer and check for updates again. Please report the result.

Thanks.
