Hi,

IE11 install from windows update fails with error 9C48. I know the error means that wu thinks IE11 is installed, but it isn't (or isn't installed correctly). I have gone to installed updates to uninstall ie11 but it isn't listed. IE10 was listed however. I uninstalled that. and IE9 right after that. I have gone to turn off ie11 (or whatever is listed there) from "Turn windows features on and off" but the box comes up blank. I have tried accessing the internet options control panel but nothing happens there either. (I've also tried running inetcpl.cpl but nothing happens with that either.) I have run the "FORFILES" command to uninstall IE11 (and IE10 and IE9) and it runs but doesn't do anything. Trying the install from wu generates the same 9C48 error. I have tried running the standalone ie11 installer but it reports that the current version is already installed.

Any help you could provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Let's try reapplying the latest update for IE11.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download the update MSU here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._0e12458b30dc68c269fdef445fdd68f7882cb96d.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand ie11-windows6.1-kb4074736-x64_0e12458b30dc68c269fdef445fdd68f7882cb96d.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\ie11-windows6.1-kb4074736-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?

  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post.
  10. Zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Operation completed successfully, I was not asked to restart but I did anyway.

IE runs, sort of. A window comes up, loads MSN but the settings button doesn't work so I can't check the version. Can't create any tabs, etc. IE 8 is listed in programs and features (which works now btw; yeah!). IE 11 not listed in installed updates or installed programs. I've attached the CBS log file.

Hmm... Do you have another browser installed? Just want to make sure that you can get online if required.
If so, try uninstalling IE8 and report back with the results.
