Hi,
I was trying to get WiDi working but required update. Discovered windows updates were off and when enabled , all are failing. After running SURT, it shows 16 errors all relating to AVG. I removed AVG from the pc last year using their removal tool(obviously not fully).
I am running W7 home premium SP1 x64. Zone alarm firewall and sophos home anti virus.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Hello and welcome,

Please provide a copy of the Components hive.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Hi Peterj,
Thanks for the quick reply. I've uploaded the file to dropbox as I was already logged in there. If you would prefer it to Send space I can register with them.
Dropbox - components.zip
Thanks again for you assistance

Please do not quote my reply. It's not needed.

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
3. Press the Fix button.
4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Hope you can see the files ok. I'm not used to posting things on forums

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Well done.
Please check Windows Update and report the result.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

I have 83 important updates pending, I just picked the top one KB4041083 and it failed with error 8E5E03FB. This was the error that led me to this forum but I thought it was the errors in SURT that were stopping the updates. Should I try some others or run SURT again.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Please start at bottom of the list (the oldest one or the one above that).
If it fails please do following:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each.

    Code:
    sfc /scannow
Wait for this to finish before you continue

    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Note: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the download link.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Tried the first update 3184143, failed also. Uploaded cbs.txt to dropbox.
Dropbox - cbs.txt
Scannow reported did not find any integrity violations

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Hi PeterJ,
I was looking through my installed updates today and found that since I turned automatic updates back on on 14/02/18, There has been 10 successful updates, one being KB3035490-security fix for .NET 4.5.1. Some of my failing updates are for .Net 3.x.x. Is this the reason that all 83 updates are failing? I can list the updates that have loaded if you think it worthwhile.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Download and run the WindowsUpdateDiag tool.
When the tool is completed, take a screenshot. Read this on how to take a screenshot.
Upload the image file to a file-sharing site such as Filedropper or SendSpace and post the downloadlink.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Check if Windows Update is installing updates and report the result.
Allow to reboot the machine if requested.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Tried two updates picked at random, one update KB3006137, one security KB2984976. Both failed with same error 8E5E03FB. The security update did a download then failed. The W7 update tried/created a restore point then failed. I am leaving for work shortly will try again tomorrow.

Re: SURT showing errors from previously removed avg

Hi Peterj,
Tried the updates again, no luck. Ran SURT, no errors. I've noticed on other posts here that SURT should run for about 15mins, Is there anything in the fact mine takes around 45-50mins?
Any suggestions to anything else that can be done?
Thanks again for your patience and time and expert knowledge.

Step 1:
Go to Control Panel - Windows Update - Change settings.
Select Never check for updates (not recommended).
Click OK.
Select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.

Step 2:
Download Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3006137).
Run it and report the result.

Downloaded update, went through the installation procedure, then message- The following updates were not installed Hotfix for windows(KB3006137)

Run Windows Repairs

  1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
  3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
  4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
  5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
  6. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
  7. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open.
  8. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
  9. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
  10. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
  11. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

    16 - Repair Windows Updates
  12. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
  13. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.
